Hi all,
I have a small coolant leak from a rear engine head stud by the lift handle. I know the fix is to remove bolt and handle and replace the O rings but what I need to confirm are re-torque figures. Have been told that they are 50 lbs, is that correct and what are they in NM - 68 ? Have looked in our knowledge base but cannot find them, can anyone confirm for sure ?
Also, I could do with the same figures for the chrome dome nuts on the cam covers as well please
Thanks

Hi Mike....you might find it a lot simpler to try a bottle of bars leaks.....worked on a friends S2..and no worries about losening the stud

Thanks Steve,
The engine builder also said that was a possible solution to a common problem, however he also recommended at the same time a change of O rings and a re-torque, I guess a "Belt and Braces approach" to be sure.

Hi Mike....so long as your aware that you could be causing yourself lots of problems if the studs move.....from the manual page B.8 head stud torque 54lb.ft

I don't understand the reference to O rings. I have never seen O rings fitted anywhere in relation to head studs... and I echo, in spades, Steve's warning about head studs partially unscrewing . As far as the cam cover nuts, the nominal setting is about 7 lb/ft BUT it is best never to use any kind of wrench on these, but instead to use a short handled 7/16 spanner and tighten them until they feel tight with the hand no more than half way down the shaft

Thanks guys for the advice, I decided to go the easy route first and use the water additive recommended by the engine rebuilder before doing anything to the studs and nuts.
It worked, just been out for a twenty mile run and got back with no leak now
