Thermostat Housing Gasket.....Confusion?

I have removed the thermostat housing from my inlet manifold to replace gaskets and thermostat. I purchased two new gaskets from Barratts, C28374 and C28222. C28222 is a like for like and is for the water outlet, whilst C28374 is to join the thermostat housing to the inlet manifold.

The inlet side gasket that I'm replacing is from a S1 (C23234) and is not the same size as the new one. The new one is slightly smaller and does not have enough lip to cover the thermostat bypass valley of the main inlet manifold. I thought the inlet manifolds were interchangeable between a 4.2 S1 and S2 but the gasket leads me to think otherwise.

I would have thought that the only difference between the two gaskets should be the gap for the bypass valley so that they at least marry up to the inlet face.

Pictures from Barratts and SC Parts books also confuse me.

Am I going mad here and has anyone experienced this problem and if so how?

I've added pictures of the two gaskets and both should fit against the same face of the inlet manifold side. You can see that the shape is different

Hi Nick...the thermostat houseing is different for S1 and S2.....what do you have on your car......you can find either tyoe in either model....S1 http://www.sngbarratt.com/CatalogueProd ... 696&a=2696

It's a S2, so by following through your link to the S2 inlet manifold diagram, the gasket I want is numbered 43 and you can see that this gasket is the same shape as the gasket above without the cut out section.

However, if you then click on thermostat housing and then on gasket thermostat housing to inlet manifold, you come to part no. C28374, which has been superseded by EAC7044. If you then double click on the picture of EAC7044 you get a gasket that is not the same shape as that pictured in the original diagram numbered 43.

If you fit C28374/EAC7044, water will leak between the inlet manifold and the thermostat housing!

Sorry Nick not following this now....double clicking etc not doing anything for me.....you mention the one your replaceing is from a S1?......if poss a picture of your old or houseing may help.....or local car shop gasket paper and cut one out....Steve

Sorry if this is confusing. My reference to double clicking refers to when on the Barratt website. The two pictures I posted show the differences. The first picture shows the correct shape of gasket albeit it has a section cut out (hence why it is from a S1 4.2). The second pictures shows the replacement gasket that Barratts are now sending out for S2 4.2s. You can see that the shape is different. I have now established that the correct gasket for a S2 4.2 is a gasket that is the same shape as the first picture but with no cut out.

I will have to wait until Tuesday now to talk to Barratts about this.

Hi Nick...got it now....this will help as well http://etype.chrisvine.com/tag/cooling/ you will need to use the one with the triangular hole in it ( your first picture).....dont think there is another available....the hole leads to a slot in the manifold that was used by a sleave type thermostat on the S1 bypass

I'm not going mad and the correct gasket to use is a S1 4.2 with the slot and not the one being pushed by the parts boys as a S2 4.2.

Fortunately I didn't fit it before filling and running.......unfortunately I now have to wait until next week to finish this bit.

Good news is that I did run the engine before with the old gasket and she sounded sweet

Hi Nick......just looked in the old SNG parts book, thats what i used when i changed mine a few years ago......it shows the same gasket for the S1 and S2..C23234........so you found a parts error on their site and new catalogue....there are a few others that have been noted but with so many parts its not suprising
