Hi, plenty of threads on this.
In my case I followed the procedure on the DVLA website and sent off for their info pack. Completing the forms is relatively easy using the help guide they provide. I sent mine off with the required £55 and 2 weeks later the new registration document arrived. I didn’t need an insurance certificate or MOT but did send a heritage certificate from jaguar as supporting evidence.

My experience is the same as Tims. In my case i obtained an endorsement from the Jaguar Drivers club to confirm the existence of the car. That plus the heritage certificate was all i needed plus the fee and forms. However i did have an issue where one digit was misplaced on the Nova. so please double check all the numbers.
I didnt need an mot which was good as in my case (XK120) it was a basket case for restoration

Forgot to say , I had to send the original Californian registration document as well.

This is something you couldn't do before the cars became MOT exempt. When I made enquiries I was told the car needed an MOT, which I'm sure was correct at the time but things have changed so I think I'll have another go at registering mine.

What did you guys put where it asks Period of tax applied for i.e. 6 or 12 months

Did you just leave blank?

I do not need to tax mine as it is still WIP

I can confirm that it used to be mandatory. Mine was registered in March 2018 and you had to send an MOT certificate in with the V55 (which meant expenditure had to be made to get it UK spec and roadworthy first).

Just had a look at a copy I took of the application document “ Application for first tax and registration of a motor vehicle”

I applied for 12 months tax - which of course was free.
I definitely didn’t have an MoT - still haven’t but will get it done once weather warms up a bit !

Hi guys, did anyone have to inspect the car for the DVLA?

My mate just had his Healey done and an inspector turned up (by appointment) to check it and he had to see it move under its own power!! He didn't have the original USA paperwork though so maybe that's why. He was OK as the car was finished. Mine is mid resto and I wouldn't want a guy turning up to see it drive anywhere...... difficult without the engine in it!

Also, were your insurance certificates for road use or were they off road insurance policies (like mine) while the car is being rebuilt?

Thanks for your help. Any advice would be appreciated as I'm not sure whether to send my forms off now or wait until the car is nearly ready. I would rather do it now to avoid any potential delays so I can drive it the moment its done.

My experience in trying to register an american import.

I thought I would register the car mid restoration as an MOT is no longer required, and its one more thing out of the way. I note as above several people have done this.

Filled in the V55/5 included cheque for GBP55, heritage certificate, NOVA details, american certificate of entitlement, and the bill of sale plus a covering letter explaining what I had done.

Had a letter back within their SLA of 10 days saying I need to contact SGS for an examination. The letter is in 2 parts the first if the vehicle is to be inspected at home or if it has to be taken to an inspection site then it must be roadworthy.

I will contact them Monday explaining its mid restoration as per my covering letter and does it need to be complete before inspection if being inspected at home as their letter is not clear on this point. . Worryingly the DVLA now have all my paperwork and of course as per their instructions they are originals.

Update to my registration request. Contacted both DVLA and SGS. They informed me that once major components are fitted I arrange a time and date for SGS to inspect the car and take photographs. They are checking numbers.

Major components are classed as engine, gearbox, chassis? And suspension. The car does not have to be complete nor driveable/roadworthy.

A busy couple of weeks should see it ready for inspection.
