I have a 1970 series 2+2 auto 4.2 litre and I have a problem with the gearbox. It will change up through the gears and then back down BUT NOT INTO FIRST GEAR. However, I can gain first manually? Is this normal? I have been told by a friend that this is intentional to stop wheel spins? If it is not intentional how do I repair it?
Any advice will be appreciated.

I have a feeling this is a Borg Warner Model 8 D1/D2 gearbox . If so, it can be locked to start in intermediate range i.e. D2. It sounds as though this may be happening in your case.Make sure that your selector is in the D1 position

I do not think your friend is correct - the box always will revert to Low range at a standstill provided it is in the D1 position
