#1 Speedo Cable

Post by mach2andy » Wed Jul 24, 2019 7:23 pm

How should the speedo cable be secured along it's route?
Thanks in advance.

Mine isn’t secured anywhere. There’s so much else going in under the bonnet that the cable just rests against various other things - frame rails, vacuum pipes, etc. I think the essential thing is to ensure the cable follows the smoothest possible curve from the bulkhead to the gearbox. The PO had mine going all over the shop in all directions, with the result that the inner wore the outer and the speedo needle jumped all over the place.

There is a metal clamp on the top left bell housing bolt that secures the speedo cable.

Unlikely , I'm afraid Jeff, on a RHD car

The clip supports the speedometer cable where it runs over the geabox. The brackets are different for LHD and RHD; part #C17410 for RHD and available from Richard Smith.

This is the top clip:

The part number of the gearbox clip for LHD cars is C18128. SNGB sell it. it bolts onto the top front of the gearbox housing. This is a LHD car:

Incidentally the original speedo cables were a beige/grey colour rather than the black that is currently available.

Thanks everyone. I think I might have seen this clip in one of my many boxes of bits. My engine and gearbox are now fully installed, but I'm thinking that the bell housing [ sorry Jeff clutch housing ] bolt may be accessible from inside the car. My cable is grey so maybe an original item?

You're correct Andy, the "bell" housing is on your Corvette. Is your FHC left hand drive?

The parts book for the series 2 has listed the clip (c17410) and a ufs131/4r , nut and shakeproof washer . I have seen in previous postings that this clip is fixed to the rear engine mount tower. There are two holes in the lower portion of the tower.

Regards ,
Greg

HI Jeff
Yes, my car is RHD. I found lots of odd clips in one of my many boxes of bits, but not the right one. I'm assuming it's secured just to stop it clattering around and chaffing on something?
Looks like I'll be making something up.
