#1 Series 2 indicator not working

Post by spotdoc67 » Sat Aug 03, 2019 10:09 am

Hi
My indicators have just stopped working
Hazards are fine
Just had a look at the indicator stalk and it looks like someone has done some type of bodged repair with a bare wire wrapped around the base of the stalk.
Not sure what this wire is supposed to connect into.
Can anyone give me some advice please?
Thanks Tom

Dear Tom,

You'll have to download a wiring diagram for your car and look at what that wire may be connected to. It may not be an indicator wire, but perhaps flash the headlight or beep the horn. The fault might lie elsewhere, e.g. with the wiring to the flasher can, the earth connection or with the switch mechanism on the steering column.

kind regards
Marek

On the Series 2 the horn is activated by the push switch on the end of the indicator stalk. The push switch is connected to the wire that runs up the centre of the indicator stalk and the switch connects that wire to earth/ground when you push on it. This activates the horn relay. In this case earth/ground is the body/shaft of the indicator stalk. The end of the indicator stalk (as shown in your photo) is splined and fits into the alloy part of the indicator switch mechanism but this part has no connection to earth/ground due to plastic parts being between it and other metal parts which would be connected to earth/ground so this connection to earth/ground has to be provided externally and it's done by trapping a piece of multi stand braided wire in the splined connection and taking it to earth/ground.

What your photo shows is good old Lucas switchgear as it was supplied, just that the earth connection often fails, the horn stops working for the MOT and a piece of bare wire wrapped around the Lucas bare multi strand wire connected to earth gets it back working again.

All very interesting but of no connection as to why your indicators have stopped working. You need to do other checks including taking off the indicator switch covers and checking out the indicator switch wiring.

May I ask from where these diagrams might be downloaded? Thank you
