My Series 2 2+2 restoration is coming on very nicely now and I've reached the point, with the engine installed, that I'm starting on the fuel system. the fuel lines and everything are installed, the Zenith carburetors are fully restored and will also be mounted very soon, so moving up on the to-do list is; the Fuel Tank!
The original one was beyond repair and I had taken it to a motorcycle fuel tank specialist to make a price quotation, but after viewing it, he said 'hopeless', so I told him to bin it, thinking the one-hour-trip each way wasn't worth the rusted heap it was. Well, now I wish I still had it! because going through the online shops today, I'm beginning to realize, ordering a Series 2 fuel tank isn't as easy as you might think.
Starting off with the parts manual is easy; Series 1 tank is C.19801 and Series 2 C.24760. So I check the SC-Parts website, they list a 212877 (no Jag parts list numbers there) fuel tank for E-Types up to 1R 42850 (I have 1R 41839) obviously including all Series 1 and 1.5 cars. Is that C.19801?
Then I move on to SNG, where I go straight to the Series 2, 2+2 listings, and they have a C19801 and a C32888, oops where did that come from? It's not in the parts manual, not even the Series 3 manual.
Sometimes I like using Germany's Oldtimer Veteranen Shop, because they might have rare original parts that I can't get anywhere else, although they might be a bit pricey. They have C.19801 for Series 1 and early Series 2, C.24760 for Series 2 and C.32888 for late Series 2 (although not all are available).
So which tank do I need? The difference seems to be in the number of vents, although I can't really determine here (I'm on holiday right now) how many vents the tank on my car had (which is why I now wish I had kept it).
So, I am hoping on the knowledgeable people here, hoping you can tell me 'order that one' and it will be the right one.
Thanks in advance,
Sincerely,
Chris Davies, Germany

Wow. That's confusing. Try ringing a couple of the usuals and see if what they say makes any sense..
Andrew.

Hi Chris,
I can only answer the vent aspect of your question. If there is a 12mm tube part way down the neck of the larger filler tube where the petrol flap is, you need a tank with a single 12mm vent and a vented fuel cap. If you don’t have this then the car ( late Series 2 onwards ) will have had a separate small expansion/vent tank in the rear wheel arch. This set up has multiple 6mm vents coming from the tank.
As regards the confusing part numbers it might be because earlier cars had a different sump but I’m only guessing at that.

That some great information, Simon. I have scrounged a few pictures from EBay which show the differences. The first pictures show the old tank and last the later version. All I need to do now is check the filler when I get back home.
