Hi all
Has anyone here fitted an overdrive gearbox to the series 2 2+2?
I see a lot of people fit 5 speed boxes but it would seem more logical to fit an overdrive gearbox to me
I have an old 1965 mk10 overdrive gearbox under my work bench that's been sitting there for many years and was thinking while my gearbox is out of the car I could strip it and fit the overdrive of this old mk10 box onto my original box
I have measured the length and they are the same
So wouldent have to modify the prop shaft or anything
Any info much appreciated
Joe

No, it cannot be done , because an OD gearbox has a different mainshaft from a standard 4 speed box. What you might be able to do is to use the mark X box and OD, although it is possible that a different top cover will be needed to achieve the correct gear lever position

Hi Joe plenty on here have fitted overdrive gearboxes to their 2+2...suggest you try a search..there is plenty iof info...However the only unit that will drop straight in without modification is a 4 syncro gearbox fitted with a compact A type o/d....an o/d unit cannot be added to your existing 2+2 gearbox unless you swap out its mainshaft.....Steve

Ahh great
In that case I think I may as well use this box I have and fit an overdrive
I may strip down the mk10 box and remove the main shaft and other bits I may need
That way I can keep my original gearbox in the car rather than just swoping it
Good excuse to replace all the bearings and sync rings at the same time
Cheers for the info
Joe

Hi Joe
I know you posted a while back .
I've fitted a series one xj6 4 speed box and compact overdrive into my 4.2 2+2.
Its fantastic and makes a massive difference on motorway journeys.
Well worth the effort.

I am just re building the box I got
Got it in bits at the moment and starting to put it back together
It was actually in good order but I thought I may as well change the synchro rings anyways and bearings etc
Had the overdrive checked as well
I don't want to have to take it out again!
Its been a good excuse to do a lot of other things
