FILTER ON FUEL PICK UP TUBE IN SUMP

Hi Gents,
Does anyone know how far the fuel pick up tube is supposed to go into the fuel filter that sits inside the fuel sump ? I just got a new one from Barratts because there was none there previously. The tube will only go in about half an inch and I'm worried that there won't be enough room for the filter when I screw the sump back on and the filter will get compressed.

Hi I had the problem with a recently purchased one from another supplier but I am sure the filter originated from Barratts. That supplier said that he would take the matter up with them as all his stock was the same. The problem is that the diameter of the brass fitting in the filter is about 1mm smaller diameter than the pipe. I drilled out the brass until the pipe went all the way into the filter. The first one I tried was in my pillar drill and ended up with the filter wrapped around the drill, hence buying a second filter. Second attempt I drilled it by hand with the filter horizontal in a vice,VERY CAREFULLY . Much more control over how much material was being removed and how deep I had gone. Worked very well.
The pipe now goes all the way through the brass item so that the bottom of it is just about all the way into the filter.

Hi Steve,
I have the same problem. The one I just got from Barratts (USA) is too big for the pick up tube to go in all the way. I was thinking of making it bigger with a drill like you or just cutting a half inch off the pick ups tube so it will fit inside the sump. Apparently the manufacturer hasn't corrected the problem.

For anyone who runs into this problem, I had to gradually enlarge the entrance to the filter with a drill to 3/8 inch in order to get the fuel filler pipe to fit it. Drill very slowly and and as you feel the drill start to grab stop it or it will draw itself into the filter and puncture it. I notified Barratts USA and they said they were unaware of this problem.

If anyone else needs to do this, wrap tape around the drill bit to act as a depth stop. Make sure the tape goes a right up the bit to the chuck otherwise it will just slide up the bit. Good for drilling rivet holes when yo don't want the chuck the hit paintwork or there are pipes / wires behind.

As regards SNG Barratts deny, deny, deny standard operational procedure with the potential bewilderment and frustration it causes, I raised this with Julian himself who assured me it was something he was addressing with his sales staff.
