#1 Britax ignition lock switch assembly questions

Post by cdnp62000 » Thu Oct 22, 2020 7:57 pm

My LHD britax ignition switch has s@%t the bed.
As soon as the battery is connected, the car tries to start. Power goes straight from the ignition to the starter relay and then, in turn, the starter solenoid wire with power connected.
Are there tumblers and electrics available separately that fit within this assembly?
I know the full assembly, with push on connectors is long gone. The series 3 assembly with wiring harness output is an option. For those that have gone this route, has anyone kept notes on modifying the wiring for the series 2?
Thanks for any assistance.
Roy

Roy, I had a similar problem for my project S2 and have an XJ6 switch attached to the steering lock. Not fitted or wired in yet but by a series of tests to check which wires are live in each position I made up a matrix diagram of connections. Don’t know how similar the switches are but it could be your best approach, depending on how comfortable you are with electrics. Hope this helps a bit.

You might find it a good time to fit the Ignition Switch Relay:

Hi Roy..just to add a bit more to what Geoff has said.....the lock/switch is in 2 parts......the key lock at the front and a small tin can shaped electrical switch at the rear....held in place by a very tiny screw....remove the screw and you can seperate the electrics from the lock........so then you can check out whats wrong....the key lock or electric switch......i have brought both back to life by squirting in plenty of WD40 aerosol lubricant and working them quite a bit......the xj6 electric switch is a good option if yours is dead....Steve

Does anyone have a part number for the XJ6 switch to replace the old one?
Can I take the column lock out of the equation, and just install a standard series 2 ignition switch? would the mounting bracket need to be modified?

Hi Roy...please try to put your name..with your car model in the signature area.....xj6 switch usually on ebay used or new old stock....yes you can do away with the steering lock if you want and fit the other S2 type of switch that dosnt have a steering lock.....anything non standard will require modification.....as i posted above strip down what you have first and get some spray lubricant in there.....look up SNGB jag parts supplier...they have a great website with numerous diagrams.....a very good reputation as a parts supplier....Steve

Ive got the steering lock the car, leaving the back plate of ignition switch still attached to the wires. The copper plate covering the springs has some black duscoloration on the nubs. The contacts on the back plate look quite worn. I the induvidusl contacts seem to be touching in places. Is this switch to far gone? Image[/img][/img][/img]

I would clean up all the contacts and check for short circiuts with a multi meter. ...smeer with a tiny amount of petroleum jelly...then reassemble........i would remove the complet electrical switch from the lock( held in by the tiny screw)...and remove the wires then again check with a multi meter its operation .....Steve
