If the bonnet lock handle escutcheons are fitted with the slots both facing upwards, then, with the handles locked, both handles point to the right, and I don't think this is correct. I think the handles should face in opposite directions when locked. To achieve this, one plate must be fitted with the slot facing upwards, and the other with the slot facing downwards. But which way should the handles face when locked? Both facing outwards, or both facing inwards? I've fitted the LH one first, but I have a feeling this is the wrong way around? I don't think the escutcheons are handed, but if they are, maybe I have 2 rights or 2 lefts?

The escutcheons only go one way up, as in your picture. The same on the driver’s side. And yes, both the handles will point in the same direction ie to the right when locked, up when unlocked. Bit of a pain if you suffer from OCD!

Don't laugh Richard but this lack of symmetry upsets me to the extent that I actually considered getting handed escutcheons machined from billet.

Simon, I hate to think what your psychiatrist bill must be
Both to the right or you'll lose concours points. And remember, as Humphrey Littleton would say "points mean prizes"

It must be possible to fit them either way because mine used to face in opposite directions. However since Angus retrimmed the car they now both face to the right. So that must be correct !

It is and one of his pet peeves! If you fit them the wrong way around they will be unlocked when the handle points down. This means vibration and inertia could cause your locks to open as they shimmy downwards with potentially disastrous consequences.
