#1 Accuspark Electronic Ignition Performance Pack

Post by Bigcatfrankie » Sat Feb 06, 2021 5:43 pm

Has anyone fitted or had experience of Accuspark electronic ignition systems?
They're advertising a pack, suitable for the Series 2, on eBay at the moment.
For £104-95 you get a Lucas 25D6 electronic distributor with Stealth electronic ignition module, Accuspark red rotor +coil, 8mm silicone HT leads and a set of AC12C spark plugs.
I don't know how easy the components are to install and whether it involves messing about with the timing?!............and is the system reliable and worth the effort installing?

I bought what I suspect is a very similar "Lucas 25D6" from Simon BBC and it has been fine. It was easy to fit because it just replaces the original distributor and you set the timing up the same way. As I wired it up with a separate +12volt feed rather than just connecting the +12volt lead to the coil, my rev counter continues to work fine as well.

I also have one in my MG Midget and they've both been reliable so far and the performance is excellent with no points to wear or adjust.

The downside is that you don't know what the advance curve is but as I've said on here before, no doubt it's better than the advance curve on a worn out Lucas original and in my case I wanted to move to a distributor with the benefit of with vacuum advance.

Be aware that the advance curves on these distributors may not match the original.

I bought a SimonBBC unit many years ago, ostensibly correct for a 4.2 E Type..

On mapping the advance curve it topped out at 42 degrees of advance and the curve was not very close to original.

I have no direct experience with the Accuspark units, but for what you are paying I would suspect the replacement distributor is similar.

Personally I would get your original distributor rebuilt and set to correct spec. If then you wish to dispose of the points there are a number of Hall effect units on the market which will do this.

Hi Tim
I fitted one of these last year on my series 2
I dident use the leads as they are red and I dident like the colour
It all fitted straight in without any problems
I have also fitted a few of these kits on my customers boats and a couple of other cars
Last year I had 3 of the red rotor arms fail
The little lug inside that locates to the top of he distributer shaft sheared off on all of them
I phoned them and told them but no real answers
I have since replaced all the rotor arms in the kits I have fitted
Including my car with genuine lucas ones
Its important according to accuspark that you have the correct coil and you must not leave the ignition on without starting the car
This can cause the module to burn out
Having said all this I am going to replace it with a megajolt system this year at some point
I have since had many people say these kits have failed after a time and usually somewhere miles away from home
And after the rotor arm carry on I won't be fitting any to my customers engines either
Will go for a more expensive kit

Thanks for all your replies...........most useful.
There seems to be some doubt over the reliability of the Accuspark unit so I will probably give it a miss!
My car has always been a real pig to get started but I'm thinking that a new ignition coil may well help as the existing one looks a bit tired!
