#1 brake bleeding advice

Post by spotdoc67 » Tue May 04, 2021 9:36 am

Hi
I'm planning to replace the brake fluid in my 1969 S2 FHC.
I can see that access to the bleed nipples on the rear callipers is not great.
Can anyone share tips on how to do this without too much pain and swearing!
many thanks

Tom

You need to remove both of the front most shock absorbers.

This is easy to do and will save you a lot of frustration trying to get spanners and tubing onto the nipples.

thanks
I thought that might be the way to do it.
Do the front shocks generally come off easily?
It looks like one long bolt though the lower mount of both shocks. I can't see the upper attachment to the cage.
Do I need a jack under the wishbone?

Hi Tom......the top shock should have a bolt from the inside with a nut on the outside of the irs cage.....you will have to take the pressure off to get the top/bottom bolt our....jack up and support the car...then just use a jack to just lift the lower wishbone slightly so you can remove the bolts....Steve

where is the best place to locate the axel stands without damaging anything?

Hi Tom a good support point is under the large bush of the radius arms......however not knowing the condition of your car im vary wary of giving advice on how too support your car if your going to be working under it.....I think you need to take extra care and plenty of supports ...not just axel stands....Its starting to sound like you arnt very experianced......your brakes are important.....i would think about haveing it done professionally......Steve

thanks
fair point
my radius arms/ mounting points are all solid
I've done v little work on my E type as I've always been a bit wary because of it's value now.
I'm pretty experienced on all my other cars (MX5, Morris minors) and have done engine swaps, auto to manual conversions, disc brake conversion and bled plenty of brakes
I'd rather gather as much wisdom before I start a job!

Hi, had a leaking brake caliper ( outside caliper drivers side RHD). Was able to loosen bleed nipple (7/16 ratchet spanner) before verifying the calliper itself was leaking.
Removing front shock absorber then allowed me to remove the caliper easily and replace with new one.
Girling calipers, were fitted, series 1.5 car
Series 1.5 roadster
Series 2 roadster
