#1 radiator fans and ac not working

Post by spotdoc67 » Mon May 31, 2021 6:37 pm

Hi

thanks for any help.
1969 Series 2 US spec
I'm trying to work out why my radiator fans won't come on and I think it may be linked to my air con not working.
I tried bridging the Otter switch connections to get the fans to switch on but nothing happened.
If I have a dodgy fan relay no 2 (air con cars only) should it be possible to get the fans working by disconnecting relay 2 from relay 1 and bridging the Otter switch?
Is there something else I'm missing?
I've looked at the wiring diagram but I'm stating to get confused as to how the air con circuit and the twin fan circuits are connected.

cheers

Tom

Imo you have a faulty "main" radiator fan relay (the one with the 5 terminals).
The A/C fan relay immediately activates this relay by pulling W2 to ground just like the otter switch (or the A/C relay) would.
When you bridge the otter switch you should hear or feel this "main"-relay acting. If your horns are not working either maybe the line-fuse is blown.

p.s: This is based on Series 3 circuit but they are likely the same here

So first check if you have 12V on the brown wire of the "Radiator fan relay" (post W1).
If you do have you might also check 12V present at the green wire (when ignition is on).

If both is true your "Radiator fan relay" is very likely defect as you have already bridged the Otter switch.

The second relay "A/C Radiator fan rly" is basically just "inverting" the signal from the AC. When 12V is present at the black/yellow wire because AC is active it will connect the black/red wire to ground (just like the Otter switch does) and thereby drive the "Radiator fan relay" to switch on the fans.

Good luck !

Another quick check , test the inline fuse in the brown wire just above the battery usually parallel with the engine frame
