#1 Ignition switch shroud C26851

Post by Monkeyfinger » Fri Sep 10, 2021 10:00 am

It seems that the original (usually absent) rubber boot that would cover the wiring on the rear of the ignition switch is not at all easy to come by - although I prepare to be corrected. With that in mind, I am designing a 3D printed version using a flexible TPU material. I have sized it to accurately fit my own switch, but the overall dimensions have had to be estimated based on photos. If anyone has an original that they could measure, I'd appreciate an indication of the overall length and diameter of the small hole where the wires exit. Attached are some images of my current prototype.

Hi Richard,
I think I have an original cover but will have to find it in all my parts. From memory it is not in good shape so I will be interested in purchasing one from you when production ramps up.

Regards,
Greg

Thanks Greg - I'm fairly happy with the sizes I've estimated, but it would be good to get an idea of the overall length, in case there's anything likely to get in the way once it's mounted. I'll keep you updated.

Richard, the shroud on my S2 is 50mm overall length. 30mm for the larger diameter and 20mm for the neck.
No idea how original the shroud is. I’ll put myself down for two, please.

Hi Geoff, that's interesting. The outer part of my ignition switch as shown in the picture, is 39mm diameter (the insulated part with the terminal connections). I guess the original rubber is stretchy, but that seems a bit more of a difference than I would expect. Is that the same size as your switch? Can you email me any pictures of your shroud/switch? The 20mm is exactly what I chose, so at least that part matches!

Depending what TPU material I use, the 3D printed version is always going to be more rigid than a rubber version, but as long as it has a degree of 'flex' it should work fine. I would be happy with it as I've shown, but I can easily change the length, although I feel it will need to be a bit longer than 50mm to accommodate the connectors and not crowd the wiring too much.

Richard, to clear up any confusion I’m giving the lengths not diameters. Only referring to diameters to show which part has the longer section of shroud at 30mm long.

I hope that’s a bit clearer

As a happy customer of an initial item I can say the shroud fits very nicely, a bit longer than the old one so doesn't get pushed back by the cables on the end of the switch like the other one did. Making a neater and tidier ensemble.

Well done Richard.

Can these fit S3s as well? Is the switch and steering lock the same?
