Indeed. Five minutes to remove the unit. Just removed mine to replace the ancient radio. Wanted a radio that provides "HD Radio" (i.e. digital FM broadcasting). Unfortunately apparently none of the of the "retro" radios have this feature so I went to the local auto audio shop and had them enlarge the opening for a single DIN radio.
Speakers are Infinity Reference REF-6532ex

Worth ditching the speakers in the centre console and putting them in the footwell at the same time. Makes the centre console lighter to manoeuvre and gives better sound. There is a topic on the forum to help.

Just chuck something like this in the storage box behind the seats and connect via Bluetooth through your phone. No messing. Keep the old one in the console for looks.
Their are much better portable Bluetooth speakers out there too. Louder. Automatically integrates your phone calls and sat nav as well as Spotify etc. Job done.

Apart from those particular speakers now being out of stock, what does "chuck something like this in the storage box behind the seats" actually mean? EDIT: There's a lot more of them available on fleebay.
Those speakers appear to be battery powered. Do you propose similar ones are wired in somehow with a charger or left loose and taken out for charging every so often. Not a lot of use on a long journey?

Most of them have excellent battery life and can be charged using micro USB from the cigar lighter, just like an android phone and etc.
I have a UE Boom and it gives excellent sound reproduction - far better than a noisy old car deserves. It even sounds great in an open top sports car.

Yes Jerry,
Plenty of choice available for battery powered Bluetooth speakers. They are really good now.
Most have 8 hours, some over 20 hours and also sound great.
How long a journey are you planning?
You can always charge on a cigarette lighter USB if you want.
