#1 Help with timing.

Post by BKC-USA » Sun Sep 26, 2021 4:35 pm

I have some rookie questions on timing…

I have a 1969 E, 4.2 OTS. I loosened the one bolt at the base of the distributor … it won’t budge. What am I missing?

As I understand it my distributor is fitted with a vacuum retard, whereas the hose nipple faces the radiator. Is this removed for initial timing?

And if anyone can point me to a “E-type timing for idiots” document, preferably with pictures I’d appreciate it. My searches have me going in circles.

Thanks in advance.

Brian, posting as you have has produced suggested links below. An advanced search of “timing” in the topic title will give you lots of ideas, too.
As for the dizzie not budging, just general stiffness in the housing, lots of plus gas or similar to ease it. Can you loosen the clamp completely so it’s not tight on the dizzie or engine? Just general things to try to find what might be binding.

The bolt was thoroughly loosened. It wouldn’t budge, and I didn’t want to resort to excessive force if I was missing a critical step.

As for searching/advanced searching, the results were many, and not what I was looking for.

I dont know of an E type timing for guide for idiots with pictures ...the Jaguar service manual will give you all the details you need but you may need to read it a few times to fully understand it.....Steve
