#1 What do I put in first …

Hi all,

Am restoring my 2+2 from scratch.

And it’s just out of the paint shop (light baby blue metalic) … a beauty.

So I read a lot and wanted to start to put A post rubbers in, but then read about the seal retainers …

Are they also being “used” by the Canrails (on the inside of the car?) as a means to attach the Can rails?

Or can I start with the rubbers, fit the doors and then start on the interior?

Thanks for your knowledge.

Bart

I suggest that you start with the wiring loom

Hi Bart....Have a look through the restoration section.....there are plenty of full rebuilds well documented....from when the owner first gets the car to stripping down, painting, rebuilding.....Steve

You can just glue the A post seal in if you are not a stickler (scuse the pun) . Fuel pipe up over the rear axle housing is an early job.

With fresh paint get it well protected with cellair foam or similar. Trying the fit of doors or anything else will be a great way of scratching that new paint.

BTW, add your name and car series and type to your signature area as it helps people know how to respond to questions.

So the sequence can be:

Wiring boom
Fuel pipe
Apost (rubber part)
Door fitting

But then what?

Dashboard ??
Canrail and rest of inside part??

I just need the order, the rest I will figure out via previous posts.

Thanks in advance

Hi Bart, the interior crash rolls or cantrails along the inside above the side windows are held in place by screws that go in through the seal retainers and under the rubber seals, therefore the seals have to be fitted to the rear quarter lights after trimming.

The first thing that goes in are the windscreen washer jets and tubing, and the heater pipes that go behind the dash.

So sequence for now

Headlining
Wiring loom
Fuel pipe
Apost (rubber part)
Door fitting
Dashboard + heating + washers
Canrail
Bpost rubbers
and then rest of inside part (what is the best order here?)

Bart, as Steve suggests above look at the restoration section and get a feel for how others have done it. You may not wish to do all yourself, need help for some tasks, these and other considerations (e.g. your available time) will control the order in which some of it is done. Don’t rush it.

Also, read the books by David Barzilay and Chris Rooke and read the online blog by Chris Vine, all easily found/bought.

First thing I did when the shell came home from the paint shop was the self adhesive sound deadening sheets. Next thing was rustproofing. Then I left it to drip for a week or two.

:yeahthat:

Then you have fun getting covered in Waxoyl or whichever rustproofing you use while fitting the looms.

Yes, the through dash heater pipes, screen washer system, wiper rack and fuel line all before the engine, gearbox and rear suspension go in.Getting these fitted frees up a lot of space in the workshop too. Front suspension next so you can get the car down on its wheels and be able to move it about if required.

I would leave the trim items until all the major components are fitted so you minimise the risk of damaging or marking them.

Expect to do some things multiple times and be prepared for the poor quality aftermarket parts you are almost certainly going to buy.

Good luck and enjoy the experience.

Looking at the Avatar ...i assume its the car being discussed its on its wheels, suspension, engine in?.... so not a bare shell respray?......Steve

You could be right, Steve, but I assumed a ground up restoration from Bart's opening line stating he was starting from scratch.

All,

Thanks for your brain.

And yes (my mistake not to mention it) … all mechanics are (almostj done.

Engine and gearbox in, engine runs, is on it’s wheels etc

Now it is cosmetics time.

Therefore my question on the order.

(I’ve been through the restauration posts but there I could not distill a sequence.

So then my ask to the group

Hope you can help.

Be well.

Bart

Hi Bart.....do you have the books as reccomended in a post above...and also looked through the Chris Vine blog thats also mentioned.....both will give you a good idea of what needs doing when.....Ideally you do your research then ask us questions when your stuck on something......Tell us mor about your build....was it a complete car...did you remove the parts for the respray.....etc...plus add some photos of your build so far....would be worth starting your own restoration thread.....then the next builder can see how you done yours and in what order........Steve
