Hi,
First post. Glad to find this forum. Recently purchased a '71, (built October '70) E type from local British used car dealer/repair shop. When I inquired about the pinched off tubing at the "Y" union between the carbs, (see attached photo), he said it was remnants from the emissions system, and not to worry about it. Wondering if I have the correct information, and I REALLY don't have to "worry about it." As a side note, after adding about 500 miles to this 46,000 mile car, I believe the fuel pump my be failing, as it "clicks" continually, while the engine is running.
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike and welcome to the forum,
The Strombergs are not original to your S2 and are almost certainly from a later XJ6. The pinched off steel pipework was part of the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system introduced in 1973/4 so was never used on the S2 E Type. It was used on later V12 S3s but with a different pipe layout. Ensure that there is no air leakage into the carbs via this route and probably worth checking that you have the correct carb needles for your engine.
The air filter box being black also points to XJ6 origins since the S2 E Type one was silver (unless yours has been repainted of course).

S1 and S2, unlike S3, do not have a fuel recirculation system so the standard SU fuel pump should not run continuously once the carb float chambers are full.

This XJ6 EGR parts diagram shows the same layout -C41218- as your surplus pipework, which has been rotated upwards by 90deg.
Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for your informative response, Bob. I'm thinking of removing the pinched off pipe work, and pluging the openings left at the carbs, just to clean up the appearance. Regarding the carb needles, the engine starts and runs fine, but I'm only getting about 14 MPG, and there are black spots on my garage floor under the exhaust tips. Are you saying the carb needles should have been changed when the carbs were replaced?
Thanks,
Mike

A car fitted with a SU fuel pump will click continually when the engine is running, that is normal.

The original SU pumps with mechanical points inside should not click when the engine is stationary (apart from when you first turn the ignition on and the carb fuel chamber is filled) unless you have a fuel leak.

The later SU pumps with electronic points inside can still click when the engine is stationary with no fuel leak and that is normal for them.

Thanks, John. I just noticed the constant clicking recently, but I suppose it could have been there for the 500 miles I've owned the car. My hearing is far from perfect. Is there some way for an AMATURE to tell which type of pump I have?
Thanks,
Mike

I suggest you take a photo of the pump you've got and post it on here, someone will be knowledgable enough to know whether you've got an SU with mechanical or the later electronic points.

I am wondering whether you have a facet type pump as a replacement for the SU . These run continuously and make a dreadful racket. As suggested, a photo of the pump will help

Here is my fuel pump, which John suggested I post a photo of to help identify. It runs (clicks) continually when the ignition is on. Makes no difference whether the engine is running or not. I can detect no fuel leaks.
Thanks,
Mike

Yes that's what we know as a Facet type pump. They do click continuously so that's normal but they are very reliable just not OE fitment by Jaguar which would have been a SU type pump.

If it's working fine and the clicking doesn't annoy you I'd leave it.

You can mitigate the noise to some extent by mounting the pump on rubber bobbins, that's what I did on the two cars I have that I've fitted this type of pump to but they aren't Jaguars. If you do this don't forget to fit an earth strap around the bobbins as the pump body needs to be earthed for it to operate.

Thanks, John. If I wanted to replace the pump with one that doesn't click, what would you recommend?

This is the SU pump as fitted by Jaguar originally but updated with electronic "points" to make it more reliable.

It will still "click" but in a much quieter way probably than the one you've got fitted and is OE so is in period for the car.

As far as I'm aware all the low pressure fuel pumps suitable for SU and/or Stromberg carburettors will click to some extent due to the nature of their construction. Others on here may be able to add more.

Upon closer inspection, I see that my Facet type pump is already mounted on "rubber bobbins", so probably nothing remains to make this pump quieter.
Thanks for your suggestions,
Mike
