The 'E' Type Forum

Hello All.
I have a late series 2 E Type. I have B1E non adjustable needles in my Stromberg's and its running very rich (plugs are very sooty after a 10 mile run) I've just ordered a pair of B1AR needles, hoping that's going too make a difference.
Just wondered what everyone else on Stromberg's were using.

Phil, you might get useful suggestions on Jaglovers as it’s US based where most Stranglebergs are/were. Though their petrol (gas ) may be of a lower octane which might affect things. Just a suggestion if no one in the UK comes up with answers.

Might be an idea to check the depth of the jets below the bridge - if they are too low then the mixture will be too rich whatever needle is in there . Also if the jets are worn then this can make the mixture too rich . Adjustable needles or jets are available , the US J-L forum has lots of info on this . One easy way to cure richness ( apart from buying an E ) is just to lower the needles into the jet by a few mm , it should do the trick .

For just a 10 mile run that looks way more rich than just an incorrect needle, especially as Strombergs are so well calibrated when new. Are all six plugs the same or is there a difference between the front and rear three?

I'd check the choke mechanism is releasing fully.

Also worth checking there's no split in the diaphragm (although I would expect that to give a rich mixture).

Update. I replaced the B1E needles with B1AR needles and it made a big difference, after a 40 mile drive I checked plugs 2 & 5 (see photo), also idle is much smoother.
