#1 E Type S2 gearbox mount

Post by PeterHewitt » Wed Apr 13, 2022 8:17 pm

Well now a new issue.

Has anyone got experience with the gearbox mounting, I fitted new rubber and now I think the gearbox is too high. I need advice on how the rubber fits and how the engine height is set.

Oh by the way it is a series 2 e type

What makes you think it sits too high? Definitly loosen and adjust the engine stabilizer. Only fitting the locating bush and the spring pad (rubber ring under the spring) I don‘t see how the gearbox could be made to sit too high.

I‘ve only done it twice, but setting the height of the engine/gearbox is achieved by the front engine mounts and the gearbox mount. The stabilizer on the bulkhead carries no load. „Turning“ the engine on the front mounts might give a small amount of height adjustment to the left or right side.

As Martin has said, the engine height is not " set" at all, except that 4.2 litre cars should have a shim under the right hand ( carburetter side) engine mounting to prevent the carb linkage fouling the engine frames

Nor is the gearbox height adjusted : it floats freely on the spring

Note the important thing about the bulkhead stabiliser is that it should carry no vertical load either upwards or downwards : the engine and box are left to find their own level and then the two halves of the stabiliser are screwed to meet in the middle of the bar without either raising or pushing down the engine/box

Check you don't have the spring from an auto box fitted.
