Hi all,

I am in the proces of refurbishing my Series 2. 2 +2.

Existing Strombergs were overhauled and found to be pitted. fitted refurbed ones. still not great.

My queries;
1. do the Strombergs require particular setting / adjustment for them to work well?
2. should i consider conversion to Triple Su's.?
3. or consider conversion to Webbers?

with options 2 or 3. used or new? and best sources?

thanks in advance.

Bill

Bill,

the Strombergs will deliver adequately, once set up good. Adjustment possibilities are limited. What helped mine a lot was installung adjustable jets, that really made it possible to get them working well. I still have some fine tuning to do, but since the adjustables are installed at least I can drive well. The upgrade to 3x SU is expensive but nice, the Weber‘s hard to get right. Check archives for the secondary throttle fix with the Strombergs - it is rumored to help throughput. It definitely made a difference on my engine.

As well as the secondary throttle fix mentioned above you need to change the distributor to one with vacuum advance and the UK specification timing advance curve.

With these two modifications, Strombergs will give adequate performance.

I would be inclined to get it running very well before changing out carbs to ensure your running issues are indeed carb related.

What do you mean by "pitted" and where on the carb did this occur? Corrosion pitting in the float bowls, for example, are a non issue unless there are actual holes.

Were your original carbs examined by a vintage carburetor specialist with expertise in Z-S carbs? Or were they done by a non-Jag specialist? I ask as it's getting quite difficult these days to find workshops who really understand Z-S and SU carburetors, unless they specialize in vintage British machines.
