Hi
I'd be grateful for any advice
1969 series 2
I start the car and then switch off at the ignition switch but the engine keeps running. Not like if the timing was out but just running normally until I disconnect the coil.
I have just replaced my alternator after it was fixed and was testing electrical continuity between the alternator loom and the battery and ignition warning light prior to this happening.
Alternator is working fine and ignition warning light comes on and goes off once the engine is running.
I'm confused as to why this is happening and would value any thoughts.
thanks
Tom

Sounds like a stuck ignition relay to me if the car has one.

Hi Tom.....the ignition switch..electrical part behind the key lock can be a bit hit/mis.....I would be looking a that...a tiny screw holds it in place....remove and test it on the bench....Steve

thanks both
where about is the ignition relay on a US left hand drive 1969 car?
I was wondering if it could be anything to do with the alternator relay?

The ignition relay is only used to switch power to the starter solenoid.......the ignition/key switch switches power on/off to the coil.....if you can stop the car by removeing wire from coil then try the ignition switch as I mentioned above....do you have a wireing diagram..Steve ps relay probably on bulkhead engine bay or under dash on the side

There is no ignition relay, as mentioned, the ignition feed (white wire) is direct from the ignition switch.
I would check your alternator wiring and relay. It could be you're feeding 12 volts into the white wire coil and fuel pump line from the alternator relay bypassing the ignition switch.
Check the wiring to the alternator relay is correct. If it is, remove the white wire from the alternator relay and start the car and then turn off the ignition switch and see what happens. If the car continues to run the problem is the ignition switch, if it stops, the problem is your alternator relay.
