#1 Zinc and Powder coating

Post by Francis » Thu Jan 13, 2011 11:56 pm

I brought all the screws and sundries you will see in this attachment to get zinc coated yellow so that I can re-use the original screw that came off my car, back on my car. That's originality!

I had to catalogue and picture all the diffrent bags that I made in the disassembly phase so that they could put them all in one big basket of yellow zinc, an other one of white zinc and I also send a hole bunch of parts to be powder coated. Take a look:

Thank You :D

It is a lot of fun when you are into it!

A good way to spend quality time with yourself!

Today I got my first large batch of replacement parts for the re-assembly. One of probably 4 or 5 to come. ( at about $3 to $7, 000.- each...) so I am like a kid on December 26th...

Guys,

So the parts are back from powder coating, white and yellow zinc coating. I now have a bucket full of joy... Hours and hours to sort the bolts back to the original bags they came from before the zinc treatment...

The parts rack is slowly filling up, waiting for re assembly. But mostly waiting for the tub (body) of the car to come back from the paint shop.

Wire wheels hubs are on the rack, I now need to buy the wire wheels and tyres... The interior will be cinnamon color and I should order it in the next few days. I also need to order the full exhaust system. I debate now keeping the porcelaine manifolds versus a large bore strait pipe for more horse power. What di you think?

Francis

A wide bore manifold will give you more power at maximum revs but it will cause a loss of torque between 2,250 and 2,750 rpm, just where you need it for overtaking. So unless you intend to go racing stick with the original manifolds as they are very well designed and suit the XK engine perfectly. If you want a bit more noise continue to use the standard manifolds and mate them to a big bore exhaust system.

Just for the sake of originality, I tend to agree with you. Besides I thing the original ones look cool!

Do you know a place (preferably in America) where I can get my manifold re-porcelainized?

PS I changed the pictures for focused ones on my last comment.

Francis

The manifold porcelain finish tends not to last more than a few thousand miles, less if rain water splashes on them when hot. A lot of people in the US swear by Jet-Hot http://www.jet-hot.com/ for re-finishing. No personal experience of using them though.

Yes I did last week. Two lenses for the flashers at 27 pounds and two of the side markers at 10 pounds (the orange ones) from England on e-bay. Why?

I will check on the Jet-hot site. Thanks.

Here is what I have been doing for the last two hours while watching reruns of the 2010 DTM champoinship on Speed TV.

You take a bucket of screws and do this...:

It was me that sold them :D I bought them in error a few weeks before, as my e type doesn't have side markers. It's a UK model. So I sold them on ebay. Took a loss on them as well !!! :(
Good that you can make use of them. Regards Mike.
