Well chaps my original Lucas Alternator has finely bitten the dust after many rebuilds.
The garage has offered me a replacement which will fit however this one has a built in regulator ( modern upgrade ? ) now i am no auto electrician but i assume this will by pass the regulator box and may need a rewire is this correct ? any help suggestions or wiring diagrams would be most welcome.

Series 1 FHC purchased 50 years ago. Courted my wife in it.
Series 1 2+2 when the kids were small now sold.
Series 1.5 OTS in opalescent maroon, Californian car. My retirement present.

Hi Keith,
It’s a real nuisance I know. Happened to me in France last year. Martin Robey also sell one on their site which has the new wiring diagram as a download. I got mine from Winspeed and used the Martin Robey diagram to do the re wire. Not a very difficult job even for someone with my lack of electrics prowess!
Good luck.

Thank you for your feed back , most helpful .
Looks like Martin Robey is the way to go , the wiring diagram is brilliant and helps a lot.

Are you certain that it is your alternator that has failed? The 4TR regulator or the wiring would be my first port of call and would be far cheaper than a replacement unit.

The 4TR was replaced 2 years ago , i keep a record of everything done or replaced on the car.
I have taken off the Alternator and pulled it apart and found one of the brushes had some how moved back from the contact disc and not making any contact , i am hoping this is the problem , will keep you posted.

Hi Keith, the usual cause of brush trouble (other than wear) is too much end-float on the armature of the alternator, new bearings are very cheap but please buy quality ones for just a couple of pounds more. If your slip ring is worn or damaged they are easily replaced too, I think I have a new one somewhere if you get stuck. The original 11AC is a very sturdy unit and well worth keeping on your car, I do have one for re-conning if you need it, cheers John.
