Post by Keith in Norfolk » Fri Dec 12, 2025 4:46 pm

Hi for some reason my left hand cooling fan has stopped working , ( The right hand one is fine )
is this a motor problem or perhaps the relay needs replacing ? i have checked all the wiring and connections and all seems fine .

Best way to test is by feeding 12V to the suspected fan....

Before consigning the failed fan motor to the bin and forking out a significant sum for a replacement, remove the rear cover and check the piece of cardboard - yes I kid not - that holds the tension springs together that keep the brushes on the commutator - or not.

Not cardboard, probably Nomex card, which is a high dielectric strength insulating material.
Would you really believe that a motor manufacturer would use a piece of cardboard in a motor? If it really was cardboard then some bodge monger has been there before you.

No one has been in there before, I've owned the car for too long. Whatever it is it is certainly not high quality and over the years the ends of the springs pull through it and let go.

Producing a plastic based replacement is a great 3D printing opportunity.

Maybe, but watch the tracking index of the material you use. It isn't something commonly quoted in filament properties. Also, the layered nature of the print may provide an easy tracking path through the part.
