#1 Alternator & brake union fixings

Post by mgcjag » Sun Mar 06, 2011 11:25 am

Hi All......Just putting my S2 2+2 back together after a suspension rebuild & an engine bay tidy up, need some info on the fitting for the 3 way front brake pipe union that fits to the horn bracket on the passenger side..should there be a spacer under it?...Also noticed with the bonnet off that the alternator pully was out of line on its drive belt & set too far back....where does the adjustment arm connect to on the pump & should it be on the inside or outsine of the alternator ..there is a cotton reel size protrusion from the water pump with a threaded hole in the centre which lookes like the place...but mine was on the top right pump bolt...any pictures/ ideas.....Thanks Steve

Yes there was a spacer on that three way union on my series 2. It is needed to clear the web on the horn bracket. I used washers to pack mine out as the spacer got lost somewhere down the line.

Steve after all these years there are a whole range of alternators, pulleys, belts and bracketry in use. Plus the only illustrated parts source for a Series 2 is a bit pricey. In your situation I'd work from first principles, which is what I did fitting an Hitachi alternator to my Series 3 XJ engine that replaced the V8 my OTS came with.

Basically, just offer up the alternator and pulley that you have so that the belt is aligned across all three pulleys. A straight edge is best but a good line of sight is accurate enough. Then fix your brackets wherever they fit best and need fewest spacers. It will be pretty obvious once you start from the pulley line and work back to the water pump and main bracket on the block.

The only thing to beware off is not spacing the alternator pivot lugs out correctly to the bracket (and/or to each other if you use a long through-bolt). If you heave on the lower alloy lugs without proper spacer support you can bend or break them.

Steve,

I went and took some photos of my alternator fixing which may help you. My alternator is not the original - it has the regulator built in - an ACR unit. However the fixings all seem to line up OK and I think they are orginal. Anyway .. hope this may help you.

OK Graham, come on....how did you get that second shot?

Were you dangling from the rafters, camera in hand, or do you park the 2+2 on its side? Enquiring minds want to know
