Gerry, have you taken the seat out to inspect where the actual break is? It is a ratchet, so have you broken the ratchet itself? As such it should be a simple welding job. If it’s the handle part, can you slip a tube over the remaining part to at least get the back into a position you like?

Thank Geoff
I do have the seat out, i am doing a total refurb its in the loft at the moment,
but i certainly will have a closer look at it,i have bought a new chrome handle
and will look at the mechanism and take it from there.
Thanks for your advice

Hi Gerry,
I had issues with a rather tired and abused reclining mechanism and so went down the route of dismantling to try to fix it. Firstly they’re not designed to be taken apart (caveat is a previous owner might have butchered mine) as parts of the pivot joint are welded.
If the seat is not staying in position, I would look first at the ‘return’ springs which engages a toothed wedge piece with the teeth in the main bracket. Secondly make sure the wedge piece is not binding so a little grease won’t go amiss. Finally check the bracket teeth but if they are damaged it might be the case of trying to source a replacement.
If it helps, here’s a few photos of my woes ….
