Dash top Removal
#1 Dash top Removal
Removing the dash top is pretty easy but I need a bit more space to get behind and remove the windscreen wiper mechanism (previous post).
Is it possiblt to remove the dash top that abuts the windscreen and how does one go about this?

Paul,
Not sure I understand you clearly enough. Dash top usually refers to the large slab of black plastic-covered semi-rigid foam which follows the contour of the screen and has the screen vents installed in it, and forms the "crash roll" forming a cowl above the instruments/glove box. Easily removed by four screws (one in each corner and one either side of the central dash section with its fold down portion.
Apart from that you have the trimmed metal panels forming the upright side portions of the dash (one with the major dials, one with the glove box and heater controls), and the centre fold-down panel.
The side panels come out once you remove some nuts/bolts buried in there somewhere, but generally folk find there is enough clearance for wiper mechanism purposes with just the black slab top removed. You probably also need to displace or remove some of the air vent hoses. I can see that removing the side panels would increase clearance but not essential.

It sounds as though Paul may have an S2 or S3 2+2 where the windscreen goes much further forward at the centre than the dashtop, and there is an infill . I cannot say how you release that, but I would imagine that it is secured in much the same way as the dashtop but with different locations for the studs and nuts. Incidentally, Paul, it always helps to get a more prompt reply if you tell us what car you are working on

Yes, it would make it much easier and my apologies.
1970 SII 2+2 LHD with A/C.
The main dash top comes off easily with 4 bolts as posted. There is the next piece (filler) against the windscreen. I can't see anything that would release this section. Could it glue down?

Paul : I am speculating here, because I have never worked on a late 2+2, but I would be surprised if the bulkhead itself differed much from the S1 cars. I have a feeling that the infill black cloth just covers what would otherwise be bare painted metal . I should try putting fingers into the "wiper" aperture in the centre panel , and try to feel what is at the top of the scuttle immediately below the infill. This will at least tell you whether it is worth taking the infill off. As far as I can remember , getting the wiper mechanism in and out relied on detaching the blades and bezels at the front, detaching the motor from the rack mechanism, and then passing the whole rack mechanism to the extreme distance it would go to one side ( sorry can't remember which side but I suspect it may have been the left i.e. driver's side in N.America) so that one can get an angle on it to take it out either through the centre aperture or possibly through the wiper motor aperture under the bonnet ( hood) - again, apologies because I can't remember exactly how I did it

I'll try your suggestion and see how I get on: should be easier than S1 because only two wipers on my S2. I'll let you know how I get on (excl. all inappropriate language etc).
Really appreciate your input.

Hi Paul,
This may not help, but my early V12 2+2 (Built January 1971) has the infill you describe, but it was just clipped to the rear dash top - they came out together and had a piece of piping, similar to that on the seats (a strip of vinyl and a thick cord filler) sandwiched between them. I doubt Jaguar changed the design between the series and if that is the case I wonder if your infill/forward section has become separated from the rear dash top, the clips missing or broken and the infill has somehow become stuck to the car, perhaps by windsceen sealant which has squeezed through? I don't remember anything actually securing the front section of the dash top to the car other than profile and attachment to the rear section as described. Perhaps a PO lost the clips and used some sealant/adhesive?
Regards,
Simon

Following "vee12eman" posting, I took the trim away from the filler piece and located two nuts and bolts on the ends that were covered. The ends are really tight to the screen but have some movement. Looks like I have to remove the air vent pipes from the ducts and then it should come away. Am being rather gentle at present to avoid any accidents.

Hi Paul,
Glad you found the issue and thanks for posting, it looks like there may be differences after all. Hope you get everything off safely and undamaged.

#11 dash top removal
The top is off! 2 nuts and bolts on the ends and then two nuts on inset bolts just a little further back than the two nuts from the front piece. Found it was necessary to take off the brackets in the centre fuse drop down in order to allow the front piece to move forward enough to pull it out.
Very grateful for everyone's help on this little project: I'll let you know later whether the wiper mechanism is any easier to move.

I am currently restoring a 69 2+2. The dash on my car had not yet been reinstalled, The car is located in Caledon not too far from you. If you wish you can drop by to see how it all goes together
