I have just fitted electronic ignition to my e type, after fitting they recommend that the timing is checked, the timimg marks are underneath.
Can anyone tell me how to use a timing light (under the car) and adjust the distributor without removing the bonnett?!!!!

Just make yourself another timing mark on the top.
There is usually a bolt around somewhere near that you can use to hold a pointer (one cut from tinplate or bent from a length of piano wire will do).
Line up the timing mark underneath, get your new pointer in line with the pulley at the top and then mark the pulley with a dab of white paint.
If you want something more permanent make a nice stiff pointer and file a goove at your new timing mark.
I bet you are now wondering how on earth you didn't think of that yourself now.
Have fun

I read somewhere recently about someone bolting another timing mark on and pulley from an XJ6 which was timed from the top on the near side somewhere - might have been in the practical classics etype restoration book if not mistaken
