Anyone tried this?
#1 Anyone tried this?
Can anyone enlighten me as to how I can remove and replace the ashtray on top of the transmission tunnel? it appears to be fixed under the trim, but do I really have to strip out the centre consul just to remove it?
Thanks
Kes

No problem is that great that it can't be run away from.

Sigh. Which of the three main ashtray permutations are you talking about????

Dear Kes,
the (hidden) base of the black surround is larger than the hole it sits in, so that part can only come apart from the back. The centre part that holds the cigarette stubs can possibly be teased out from the top, as the one on my car is only a press fit into the black surround. The whole lot is held in place with contact cement on a flimsy thin wooden frame, so expect to remove the console for access.
kind regards
Marek

Apologies Kes. It's clearly a Series 2 or 3 and Marek is right in every detail. To get the whole shebang out you have to lift the tunnel console and work from underneath to unscrew the ashtray body from the plywood base.
The cigarette stubber tray lifts out and the crinkle finish lid can be removed by pushing out the wire pivot from the side. It has an over-centre spring action so look carefully for the orientation of all parts before you remove it - if you want to do so. If yours still has the chrome leaper don't throw it away. It should have a square pin that fits the square hole in the lid and keep it orientated correctly. Modern replacements have round pins and can move around. That has been my experience anyhow.
Do this old man a fave and put your car year/model in a profile signature please?
Pete

Hmm...thanks chaps, I had hoped there was a quick fix for this but looks like it's a bit of a faff. By the way the car is a series 2 (you might have guessed this from the fact the question was posted in the 'Series 2' section)

Ha! - yeah, sorry about that, couldn't resist it! Thanks for the info though most appreciated.
And while I have you're attention...any idea why the ignition warning light is flashing off and on when the engine is running - the battery seems fine and charging well and the oil pressure good (I seem to remember that the oil pressure is somehow linked to the ignition light?) it seems to keep winking regardless of engine speed...
Thanks,
Kes

Is your warning light unusually hot to the touch? Be careful, just brush your fingertips carefully across its warm surface, don't be rough.
Does it seem to glow brighter when you get in the car and operate the coutesy light?
Does it blink rhythmically in time with the beat of the engine and speed up when you press the accelerator? They are all classic signs.
If your warning light is winking at you, I think it's in love....

That was the PG version Mark. I was going to tell Kes to go for a scenic drive, get the car throughly hot, then immediately park it the garage. Close the door gently to make it nice and dark after switching off the engine, then to turn on his radio to an easy-listening station and see if he could get ignition....
