Hi all, i have a series 1.5 e-type roadster 1968 which currently is in restauration.

I exchanged the original wiper motor for an exchange wiper motor, unfortunately some months ago.

Based on the looks of the original motor, I have ordered Part No: 8594 @ sng, this part is for a series 1. (yes, I should have know this wasnt series 1.5). see http://www.sngbarratt.com/catalogue/par ... k=y&next=y for the one I ordered.

While connecting the new wiring loom, I found out that the new wiper motor has 1 extra wire (white one) which is not part of the series 1.5 loom, , after checking the wiring diagrams, apparently one of the extra wires (Y) is supposed to lead to the 'park sensor' fixed to the armature, which was present in series 1 cars. I am 100 % sure this sensor was not part of my series 1.5 car when I removed the windscreen system.

According to the wiring diagrams of series 1 vs series 2, one of the main differences in the windscreen part, is that series 2 has a parking sensor included in the wiring motor, and series 1 has the sensor on the armature. Trouble is, that the series 2 wiper motor looks different than my original one, the series 2 motor has a round house (see

Obviously I cannot exclude the possibility that the wiper motor fitted to my car wasnt the original one, however I never had any issues with the parking of the blades.

Can anyone advise if the series 1.5 is supposed to have the round wiper motor, the series 1 square wiper motor, or perhaps even a lookalike series 1 square wiper motor with a park sensor built in?

Does anyone know if this series 2 motor would fit straight away?

I think the S1.5 wiper motor was unique and looked like the S1 (square) but was wired differently. I think there was a parking wire (?) on the gearbox casing of the motor rather than in the centre of the rack mechanism. Not sure.

Someone here will remember the contact details of the guy in Coventry who rebuilds these motors - he'd tell you everything you need to know. Steve something I think - advertises on eBay. Unlike some 'rebuilders' - such as the low-life who did my first motor, Steve rebuilds the mechanical and electrical parts. Mine had mostly just had pretty paint and a new wiring pigtail. This meant it looked fine but failed (seized) after a year - which amounted to maybe a day's cumulative use in rain ?

Yes, the 1.5 wiper motor aka DL3A was unique and only used for a short time. Early US delivery (circa 1968) S1.5 cars with rocker switches had a DL3A motor which had the park switch on the motor (you can identify these by the brown paxolin adjustable disc on the gearbox). Later S1.5 and S2 cars went back to the park switch on the wiper assembly and the round W15 motor. The DL3A has only three wires (plus earth) instead of five (plus earth) and the parking adjustment is on the motor itself. Jaguar used these because of the terminal limitations of the rocker switches. I cannot for the life of me understand why Jaguar stuck with the DL3/wiper assembly park switch when the DL3A motor provides such an elegant and easily understood/maintained solution!


The DL3A motor works by being permanently live with the ignition on. The switch controls the earth to complete the circuit, almost counter intuitive. Also there are two 'earths' (plus the body). For slow speed both the green/red and the green/brown are switched to earth. For fast speed only the green/brown is switched to earth - the green/red is disconnected. Park is of course taken care of by the paxolin disk and contact on the motor gearbox. The way the Lucas motor works means there is a field coil and an armature coil. The high speed is obtained by switching a resistor into the field coil reducing the current and therefore the field strength of the motor. The weakened field coil strength means the armature turns at a faster speed. The motor has to be started in low speed before switching to high speed.

To get it to work with a earlier/later six pole switch however you need to connect as follows:

Motor Green to Loom Green
Motor Green/Red to Loom Green/Brown
Motor Green/Brown to Loom Green/Red

I received my new loom from Autosparks and everything is correct except the fact I have a DL3A wiper motor instead of the other one and the loom is set for an S2.

Not a problem. The DL3A will easily work on an S2 wiring loom but you need to get the wiring right. Basically the S2 motor has a permanent earth and you switch on the +ve live. The DL3A (and DL3) motor is permanently live and the earth is switched. Try the wiring suggested above and see if it works.

I will test your suggestion and come back in a couple of weeks to attest if it works :)
