The choice of mgb lamps could have been made on cost not so much aesthetics ! .
New mgb rear lamps are £100 a pair ---Lotus rear lamps are £270 each --£540 a pair.
Where's the reversing lamp ?

I'm seriously considering finding a set of the Lotus Elan tail lights so that I can integrate the backup lights into those lens. This would allow me to remove the twin reverse lights that I'm not a fan of. However, this thread has me wondering about moving the license plate bracket up so that I can then utilize the Series 1 twin silencers instead of the Series 2 with their wiggle waggle of the tail pipes out to the sides.

My question is, how high would I need to relocate the license plate bracket to allow the Series 1 pipes to clear the license plate. I was just looking at my car since I've already removed the license plate bracket and wonder if the top edge of it needs to be placed on the top edge of the chrome or just below it?

Many thanks for any assistance.
Bob

Thanks. I did see that and it did inspire me. I'm unsure as to the difference in size between a UK MOT plate and a US sized plate and how that might effect the twin Series 1 tail pipe placement.

I've actually had a conversation with Marek on the Jaguar Lovers site about his lens. I will be buying that once I locate a set of Lotus Elan tail light assemblies.

Bob, I have Elan lights and straight S1 exhaust tail pipes. How large is a US plate? I can compare with my setup tomorrow

Cheers

The US plate is 12 inches wide by 6 inches tall or 30.5mm wide by 15.25mm wide. The real question is how high do I need to remount the bracket that holds the plate. I've already moved it from where it was mounted and causing the plate to be dropped down and the tails pipes splayed to the sides.

Thank you @Gfhug

Sorry James it's me not being clear in post 281, i was referring to the mgb version , unless i'm missing something i cannot see a reverse light ----the mgb had 2 stand alone separate reverse lights.
I've got two Lotus elans so i am familiar with the rear lights having integrated reverse .

Bob, from the underneath of the boot (where the number plate light is) to the straight S1 exhaust pipes is a clear eight inches. How is your plate attached? Maybe you can sort out some fixing to get it high enough but also clearly seen?

Bob, Geoff, that measurement on my car is only 6.75" . I guess there will inevitably be slight variations depending on the system and fittings used. No doubt a bit of extra clearance could be obtained by adjusting the rear exhaust mounting if necessary. There should in any case be adequate clearance for an American plate if it is mounted as high as possible. I also used Marek's lenses to get rid of the horrible "afterthought" reversing lights

I wonder what the same clearance on a Series 1 is?

Just to bring this long-running thread finally to a close  can I just point out that I've managed to achieve a life-long ambition by:

i) Not only succeeding in getting a Series II on the front cover of this month's Club magazine; but

ii) Getting its un-molested, un-modifed arse end on there in all its glory!

'Mic drop' as I believe Da Yoof are wont to say......

Well done getting your car to the front page, looks good. Although I still prefer the S1 look….
