Series 2 aesthetics
#241 Re: Series 2 aesthetics
The v12 in the s3 from 1971 was more thirsty than the 6 cylinder car with its straight 6 and with a 3.56 rear differential, it had a very low range to boot. This meant a larger fuel tank was required and that is why the boot does not taper upwards as with the earlier cars.
I doubt that Jaguar realised all of that when the s2 came out, so it's probably the other way around:- the same Lucas lights were kept but the tailboard was removed as the cheapest and easiest way to design in the larger needed fuel tank.
kind regards
Marek

Simon, that looks very nice
The slimmer central bumper works well, another good idea

Looks lovely but I’m more concerned about that white prop holding the boot lid open. I mean at least paint it in body colour!

Thanks chaps,
Marek,
I'd already bought the S2 complete units from Barratts so just needed the lenses. They were about £40 each.
The light housing is basically the same but without the reverse light bulb holder so I just added holders from RS Components which were £7 for 10.
I decided to swap the bullet connectors for Supaseal ones to prevent water ingress and also so the connections were less likely to get muddled up.
I like idea of integrated led units but decided to go the route of retaining individual bulbs just incase they ever need replacing.
Jeff,
I'll take more pics when I get chance. They original lamp backing was used but the mounting holes altered to allow the lamp to tuck up under the bumper better and move inboard slightly. I then made black powder coated fillets to fill the gaps at the side with rubber seals.
I can't tell you how much it annoys me that the boot lid comes to rest at 3/4 open. I spent ages (days) aligning the boot lid and the latch so it's all perfect only to find it probably needs an extra spring A job for you when comes to you. Your guys can probably do it blindfolded. and still not worry about chipping or scratching something.

Hi Jeff,
No drilling into the body. Everything I do in terms of "mods" on the car is with the proviso that it is reversible.
It was my intention to get the fillets painted body colour and use a different seal but Covid 19 got in the way of that plan. To make the best of the next 12 weeks I want to press on and get as much built up as possible and tested/working. I can always come back to the lights at a later date.
The filler pieces are attached to the existing bracket for the lights.
A few more pics as requested.

Cheers Jeff,
Yours definitely follow the curve of the body better. All that is needed ( in my humble opinion ) is some sort of filler piece where the arrow is pointing to make them perfect.

Jeff Cecil wrote: ↑Wed Jul 24, 2019 1:22 pmJohn, thanks for pointing that out. The wife wanted to take a trip to the mountains (Blue Ridge Parkway) here in our state this weekend. I told her there is no way we can go because of the very grossly wide rubber on the bumper. Maybe this is an atheistics? problem rather than an aesthetics problem. Either way, I'm keeping the car in the garage until corrected. Good eye!
@Jeff Cecil
Thanks for linking this on BAT. I can't send you a private message, but where in NC are you? I'm near Asheville (Brevard). Maybe I could see the lights in person sometime.

Matt,
Are you trying to do this....
Ready made side by side indicators and stop light lenses are available if you want them.
The white reversing lights are also wired up as doubled up additional red (stop) lights.
kind regards
Marek

Jeff,
we don't know what Matt is thinking. All he has told us is that he has a US import and all-red lenses. In the UK, indicators have to be amber. Amazingly, there are no pictures of rear lenses with a vertical split of indicator and stop light to match the US spec chrome housings anywhere posted on his thread - until now.
kind regards
