#1 Rear door surround issue

Post by beachbugy » Wed Oct 20, 2010 3:56 pm

Hi

Putting my interior back in my 2+2 and have got to the rear door area, my issue is : around the door aperture there seems a gap between the newly carded areas and the door seal, on a series 1 restoration site i found there is a plastic infill that was fitted, but i cant seen to find this bit listed anywhere SC or Barratts or Aldridge, I also looked at a Series 1 at Stoneleigh Sunday and he had a bit of cloth stuck around the edge which looked frankly poor ! what am I looking for ? and where ? cheers

The Series 1 did indeed have a 'plastic' piece of trim and it wraps around the gutter lip and about..... 2" inside the car. The original trim was pretty stiff and has a lot of 'V' cuts in it to make it fit.

Later cars - and this is where my knowledge dimishes, changed this fairly rigid trim to the same vinyl as other parts of the interior. So one option is to use vinyl and the other is to find a supplier of the series 1 trim.

This is your lucky day..............

I have literally spent years and years looking for this piece of trim and only very recently did I find it sold by XK unlimited in the USA.

you want this:
EType trim

HATCH FINISHER PN: BD20163-B Desc: BLACK; E-TYPE FHC
$35

and I paid a fortune to have one shipped to the UK.

Oh and they only do it in black, green and red which is unfortuante for me because I wanted dark blue.

#3 rear hatch trim

Post by vikla » Sat Sep 08, 2012 6:00 pm

Just an update on the rear hatch trim.

I have bought it from BAS the trimmers in the UK and they call it Rear Door Aperture. It's only available in black.
David Manners also lists it as BD20163, same as XKS.com

I have spent a few hours trying to fit it but am having some problems around the corners. Having found this post I see that lots of V cuts are in order something I was reluctant to do and also having read ChrisC's post at
http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php? ... 90cd303e7d I was unsure about it.

So far I have clipped it on over the gutter edge all round and under the trim panels not using any glue. However the problem is the 4 corners where it keeps coming off and I guess it needs V cutting and gluing.

Any further advice from anyone?

P.S. link to BAS product is http://www.car-hood.co.uk/content.php?n ... 0&pID=5053

Use a heat gun to soften it then screw it to the body work in a couple of places... this works but you still need the V cuts and i was never happy with the fit....

To be honest I gave up with this trim in the end and used vinyl instead which once all the other trim is installed you will suddenly see that hardly any of it is visible.
