#1 engine number not reflected properly on the plate - ideas ?

Post by Beastieboy » Mon Jun 17, 2013 4:26 pm

Hi, my plate says my engine is 7R11327-9 as does the heritage certificate but the engine is stamped 7R11527-9 (on the bell housing)

Anyone know of any mistakes made - my car was mid production in 1970 so seems strange to have a number 200 out (and 3 and 5 are easily confused)

any help appreciated
Steve

It does happen. Any more than a single digit wrong is highly suspect, but I had a 9 for 6 once on the picture frame. I could believe 3 for 8 etc. once in a blue moon.

I have a set of original Jaguar punches (for the 3.8 cars) and there are only nine in the set because they used the same punch for the 9 and the 6.

I see. And what would Sir be planning to do with the aforementioned ID punches?

Can I give you a 'ring'? :-)

They were on eBay so I thought it might be a good idea to take them out of circulation. Fascinating history because one of the first job's the engineering apprentices were given was to make a set of chassis punches - the seller made them himself and kept them. The font and size do not seem to have been replicated by anyone so it is quite easy to spot a replacement picture frame.

Just seen this post.

I have the same issue with the body number on my car.
1 digit is different between the plate on the car and on the Heritage cert.
When I queried it they said it happened not infrequently that the plates were made up wrongly at the factory. The body no. I have should be on a later S2 car apparently.

Fascinating insight into the engineering apprenticeship. I felt compelled to go and compare to my original '62 picture frame chassis number stamp and the font looks slighty different - the 7 doesn't have the tiny vertical leading edge line at the top as per the picture of your punches.

Not having any engineering background, I've got no idea how the apprentices would start to make a set of punches - How would they get the right font?
