#1 n00b question, how much?

Post by jotto » Sun Sep 08, 2013 2:23 pm

Not looking for anything other than a vague ball park figure based on info I give and your experience.

Ive started reading and I think an S2 would be the car for me.
What im hoping for would be a FHC, 2+2 with an auto gearbox. I have a manual trans in my Corvette but I would use this purely as a cruise car so ideally an auto ( Also, the wife prefers autos and she wants to drive as well! ). Something with little rust. Not too worried about it being really shiny, presentable is good for starters. Interior, again, presentable and functional. Can be LHD or RHD, no preference.
Im not looking for a show car, just something that I could jump in to and not be afraid of driving.

So, what sort of budget should I be looking at? if you need any more info to help with a guide price, please ask.

Well, you have chosen the cheapest specification . Really good RHD S2 2+2 manual cars realistically have early 30s asked for them and probably fetch something in the region of ?28,000 . Autos fetch a good deal less, partly at least because the demand for them is very limited. The same applies to LHD cars in the UK . For each of these factors I would deduct something like 15% so that for the spec you are looking for I would expect to pay approaching ?20,000 . However, condition is everything, and within the last couple of years I have seen at least 2 quite presentable but not perfect LHD auto cars go at auction for less than ?10K . Of course, buying at auction is a very chancy business and not for everyone, so that in broad terms I would be thinking in the bracket ?15K to ?20K for LHD, and perhaps ?18K to ?22.5K for a good RHD example

PS I have just looked on the classifieds on the JEC website ( Jaguar Enthusiasts' Club) and there is a RHD auto not too far from you , Warminster , advertised at ?23K with recent respray ( be careful ! ) and some work done on it

Also remember that all cars went down the line capable of being LHD or RHD so conversion is not difficult (about ?1,000 for parts). If you find something please give Angus Moss a call (07528 811808) and get him to do a survey and valuation for you as the pitfalls are many and he really knows S2's
