Post by rolando38 » Sat Jun 13, 2015 4:53 pm

I've got a few loose wires leading nowhere...all located on the right hand side (of my LHD car)

any clues ?

and what was the purpose of the last switch on the right on the dash ? heated rear screen ?
has anyone used it for a fan control switch ?

The second photo looks like the wires to the fan relay mounted on the picture frame. Have the fans been re-wired?

The right hand switch is for heated rear screen, if fitted.

Hard to tell wire colour but things located where the first wire is are oil pressure sender (do you have a mechanical gauge fitted) and also the oil pressure failure warning light.

here are a few cleare pics with :
. one set of wires being black and black/red
. the other one being black and black/green
Image

the loose single cable is beige/black

the fans feeding has been fiddled, now only one single cable and they run permanently; if I switch the cable to the thermostat: same, permanent running whatever the T?

I understand from Manual that in my case of a 2+2 with Aircon, there should be 2 relays, one overriding when Aircon is turned on
I looked for a couple of relays but only could find 3 close to the battery; wrong ones ?

Hi Ronaldo......have a look in the manual pageP.X.s27 it shows tbe 2 extra relays used for air conditioning......one is in front of the battery as shown in your photo, the other should be located with the main fan relay....looking at the wireing diagram the colours of your loose wires match the diagram for the fan relays(inc the additional one).......there is also a section in the manual for tbe air con and allits parts inc wireing...its in the knowledge base

great Steve, thanks very much; I'll have a deep look into the manual
so my wires should come from the relays and go to the thermostat and fans motors ?

If i'm not mistaken, on your last pictures, the black / red is for the otter switch, which says to the fan at what moment they have to be in function. And this is probably the reason why your fans are always on the go.

Can you show us how the otter switch is wired on your car?

As per the white wire close to your carbs, it's either related to the coil, or the oil pressure. Does your oil pressure gauge works?

the Otter switch is the thermostat, right ?
here is how I found it : not connected, but with a wire going to the fans close-by, and if I connect it to the thermostat, the fans run permanently with ignition on (even when engine cold)

Yes, that's the otter switch. Re-route it correctly, or keep them always in working mode, or add a switch somewhere on the dashboard... it's so dangerous to be forced to stop the car and open the bonnet in order to switch on the fans...

Yes, I've had this done on mine, and at the same time had it jigged so that the yellow HRS light comes on whenever the fan kicks in (be that because I've demanded it via the switch or whether it's because the thermostat has triggered it).

Very subtle, there's no associated additional cockpit switches or visible wiring, the light gives additional peace of mind without having to resort to judging if there's been a voltage drop from the battery gauge, and as Osgii says jumping out of the car to fiddle with the wires is not always a safe or practical option.

Although my car's got a HRS the car itself lives in a garage and tends not to go out in poo weather if I can avoid it, so I reckon the chances of me ever actually needing to use the HRS are minimal. Getting stuck in traffic with an overheating engine is a different matter though. And if functioning HRSs should one day become as sought after as flat floors I can always get the wiring swapped back over again 8)

I think I will try to re-wire correctly the fans first , changing the relays/thermostat if these are aulty, and then see if a override is needed with the rightmost switch (no heated windscreen on my car)
will keep you posted
thanks for your help

Yesterday I have been able to rewire correctly the fans and related relays !

One of the fan relays close to the rad was not working; when I opened it, the contact blade was bent therefore contact was permanent (sorry no pic)
and probably the thermostat gave up afterwards as being crossed permanently by full current

I only need to change the Thermostat now and hopefully it will bo OK
