#1 Gear Lever Boot

I've decided to replace my gear lever boot, as the old one was starting to look like that hat from Harry Potter that chooses which house you go to:

Having removed the gearbox cover (a three handed job) I think I've discovered the car's original paint (Primrose?).

The new boot feels and smells like quality leather, but isn't quite large enough to fit around the metal retaining ring. I tried very hot water to see if this would make the leather more supple, but this wasn't very effective. I borrowed my wife's hair dryer, which proved great for the job, and allowed the leather to be teased over the edges of the retaining ring. Not having several hands to hand, I used clothes pegs to hold the leather in place whilst the glue dries.

The next step is to fit the chrome ferule that sits on top of the boot. However, getting the nylon base out of the chrome ferule is proving quite a challenge. I'm presuming that the nylon base goes inside the leather boot, and is then pushed up in to the ferule?

It unscrews from inside/below the chrome. A finger pressed hard into the gearstick hole has provided sufficient friction on the flange to undo the ones I have re-trimmed.

I've just refitted the top of the boot inside the chrome ferule. With advice from people on the forum, I got the nylon ring out of the chrome; held it tight with long nosed pliers and twisted the chrome ring. Suddenly went and unscrewed fine. The nylon then goes inside the boot and screws back in. Stayed put so far!

Thanks Malcolm. No amount or prising will shift it. I can only presume the previous owner was fond of super glue. I've ordered a new ferule and nylon.

In the meantime, chrome finishing ring and boot are now in place:
