Mine failed and i found it confusing with lots of references to later cars having short "non hydrostatic" or long hydrostatic without a return spring ?

So, to confirm that all Series 2 cars were fitted with a long (95mm or 3 and 7/8ins) "non hydrostatic" unit with a return spring. Part No. C29801
I bought a lockheed unit which has 3232 648C on the body. This is the same as the unit removed from the car which was fitted 10 years earlier.

As David suggested i replaced the studs and nuts with allen bolts to make it easier to remove next time. 5/8 UNC x 1" . It did need an allen key cutting down slightly to make it easier to use.

The clevis pin spring clip was not available from the major suppliers so i sourced a few alteratives and this worked best.

The original operating rods dont seem to be available and aftermarket parts are made fully adjustable so as to work with the long and short slaves but seem to come only as part of a kit with the clevis pin, split pin and rod eye end.

Thanks Gerry, so if I understand correctly the hydrostatic long does not need a return spring?

To be honest and the difficulty in replaceing a worn out thrust bearing i would advise anyone to fit an external return spring and adjust correctly at regukar service intervals.......Steve

yes, disassembling the engine and gearbox to replace a simple clutch release bearing is not my favorite sport. So I am going to adjust a return spring, this is the advice of an experienced sage.

Wise advice Steve. Ive seen too many release bearings prematurely worn due to the hydrostatic not self adjusting properly. We always fit the smaller cylinder with the external spring.
