#1 OD Gearbox for sale

Post by iani » Sat Jan 17, 2015 6:06 pm

I saw this on eBay: http://ebay.eu/15jjcj2

This unit has the same top cover as the E-Type synchro 'box and 1st - 4th ratios are the same. I bought my OD 'box from the same place and I know the price can be reduced, especially if you don't want the bell housing. Factor in about ?900 to have the OD reconditioned and the 'box checked over, it's a great improvement and cheaper than a 5sp conversion.

Looks good but am I correct in thinking that it will only fit a 2+2 S2?

I sent mine to ORS, that was the cost for the OD and gearbox overhaul.

Hi All......these are very much in demand gearboxes when they have compact type A overdrive.......being snapped up quickly by the kit car guys......they offer a great value 5th gear option to the 2+2 cars or (S3 ots)... ?1k will get the gearbox and overdrive overhauled so for sub ?2k u get a great 5 speed box......use the top cover and stick from your existing box....u then have the option to keep your old box or sell to make you new 5 speed even greater value.......Steve

The S Type 'box has the right top cover already Steve, no need to swap it over.

Huh? That's a bit like saying an E-type is worthless because the radiator is missing, surely? Do I detect a bit of 'wheelbase envy'? :-) :-)

There is nothing missing that someone with a manual car doesn't already have and there's nothing someone converting an auto can't easily obtain from any synchro box. A gear stick and pivot assembly are trivial to obtain. I've probably got half a dozen lying around.

The box is about double what they used to fetch 2-3 years ago and about 3-4 times what they went for 5-8 years ago - very like the E-type. It is also being sold by a trader rather than privately, so is presumably of a reasonable standard and more expensive for that reason. Fully refurbed it's a superb drop-in option.

Peter . No wheelbase envy ! (I've never felt the need for a higher ratio because I have hardly ever exceeded 100 mph - I did do 120 or so for a bit in Germany once but found it very draughty !

However, expensive components with bits missing worry me . They are virtually impossible to replace, and whilst I accept that if you already have a car you may have the necessary bits, it is not guaranteed, and as you know, the days when you could just pick up E type bits at Spares day have now largely gone . Also, the boxes with saloon ratios definitely diminish the enjoyment of an E - one only has to compare an S2 with an early 4.2 with the EJ box to realise that the EJ close ratio box makes the car

The missing bits are not model specific Christopher, being the same for every 4-synchro. Ergo, 'E-type uplift' pricing need not apply. There is one version of the selector lever whose 'button' is wider than the short top type, but that's easy enough to grind narrower. Therefore, in effect the missing bits are easy enough and cheap enough to source, although if you're right I'm sitting on a gold mine. Hmm, time I changed my tune and posted a for sale ad! :-)

Peter,

At least let me sell my gearbox before you flood the market sending prices crashing!

No, Peter , I'm afraid that you are not quite correct there. There is a good deal of commonality, but the gear lever "reach" on different cars differs in some cases. Thus by way of example the Daimler top cover and ancillaries differs markedly from those fitted on mark 2 Jaguars but it is not easy to differentiate them at a glance . This is why I insist on completeness - it is too late once you have bought a box but find the bits needed are not quite what you expected

Slightly changing the direction of the thread, but still on topic of MOD gearboxes.

Anyone out there with any experience of overhauling the overdrive? I've bought the Haynes manual for XJ6 S1-3 hence I have a few pages of how to strip it down.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me what things should be changed as 'default' given that it is stripped down anyways. I did a search on the forum, but didn't really get any hits. Oh, does anyone know if there is a similar forum for the XJ6, may be easier to find advice there.

cheers !

From what I know now is that you should:

-check and / or swap the Clutch

- swap all seals and o-rings, part of the sng gasket kit, 45 Euro.

- i had to swap the front Brass bearing, 30 pounds, it was worn.

- leave part 9152 out, Thats the corrugated washer. It often breaks, and its parts are then Around in the Box. It is only there to dampen a Click Sound when you engage it, so it's not really needed.

Dave from odspares is a nice guy, did Talk to him several times, and he is a LOT cheaper then limora and co. He himself said it's 1/3 to buy from him but from them !

I Mean go ahead and do it yourself. If all else fails clean it thoroughly and put it in a nice Box and send it to Dave.

Carsten

Excellent list ! Thanks for the list and the advice.

Last time I did an A-type (20-odd years ago) I had to do just what you say when it didn't work at the end, put it in a box and send to the experts.

This time I am focussed on getting it right!

Hello David,
I'm not used to counsel books, especially in french, concerning english cars, but I think you "have to" buy the following books which explains with hundreds of coloured pictures how to dimantle and rebuild an overdrive. It's cheap (18 euros) and very practical even if you don't read french.

Thanks for the tip.

I also found a Service Instruction Manual for the A-type Laycock-de Normanville overdrive published by Triumph, 25 pages downloadable from internett.

And this rather amazing 'how to' video on youtube

Hi David,

If you send me your Mail address, I can send a set of practical Classic scans to you describing a short type OD overhaul.
