#1 optional steel wheels

Post by rolando38 » Fri Feb 06, 2015 12:49 pm

hello

I've read in Porter's book that plain steel wheels were an option on late series 2
It is very uncommon, though, to come acrooss pics with such wheels
I might buy a Series 2 currently fitted with non standard wheels, and therefore I seek for original steel wheels;
my question: are they the same as the standard series 3 ? with the checkerd flag + growler logo in the center ?

like these ?

or else ?

Check out Angus's site and scroll to the bottom of the page as there is an original yellow S2 with steel wheels: http://mossjaguar.com/cars-for-sale.html

The yellow OTS was my car on my driveway (clue: sunshine).

The steel wheels are the same 6J on all the Jags that used them (Dunlop J921 stamped under the hub cap). I think they are all 35 mm offset. They can use tubeless if required which saves a couple of pounds of unsprung mass and the hub and nuts are lighter I think than a splined hub and spinner. All Series 2 had those 'Turbo' wheels as an option. In fact, technically by then the spoked wheels may have been the option.

The steel wheels on my 70 S2 FHC are identical to those on my 79 XJ12. As it happens, I currently have them fitted to neither. With bolt-ons you have access to a vast range of alloys, such as period Minilites or Campagnolo or JAP - which is when unsprung can be cut back by many kilos.

At launch the Series 2 came with painted wire wheels as standard.

Chrome Wires were an option -- ?44

Chrome Plated Pressed Steel Wheels were an option -- ?24

thanks guys !
so if I summarize, the following Jags had the same steel wheels:
E-types S2 as an option
S3 as standard
XJ series 1

however I doubt the central hubcap motif was the same "checkered flag with growler" on the XJS1

here are the current wheels of the E-type I'm contemplating to buy...not minilte alas

The Series 1 XJ had different wheels and hubcaps, painted silver IIRC. The Turbo wheels were painted or chrome on XJ and E and came in with the Series 2 XJ (in 1972?). The hub caps for XJ wheels had a plain black alloy centre with a shiny Growler. By the way, the plastic chequered flag centre for the E-type wheels is identical to the S1/S1 E-type horn push centre and a useful source for original copies of same that look so much nicer than the pale silvery repros.

thanks you Peter !

so as a conclusion - or solution - to my problem would you assume these whels are correct period ones for an E-type S2 1970 ?

or what should I double check to be sure ?

Yes, they look correct. Very hard to find in good condition in Europe where they usually rust. That yellow American car had a nice set and I have an even better set from my XJ12 but I'll keep those for originality I think.

here are 2 E-type with Minilite; not a bad choice , hum ?
would you think it adds or retrieve value to the car compared to "turbo disc" solid wheels ?

what a beauty !

can we consider Minilites as a desirable period upgrade, but not as an official Jaguar option, though ?

Hi,

There is an advert for 5 Chrome Steel wheels, including hubcaps and centre growlers for 500 gbp in the current E-type club magazine, based in UK I think. It appears to include the hubs too - I guess someone has converted to Wire wheels.

I'm dubious about posting email addresses etc. here, but if you don't have access to the magazine, pm me and I'll pass on the email address. The phone no. is also there.

From personal experience, these are hard to source, although a set of painted wheels, chrome rims and simpler hub caps, as originally fitted to my car, are fairly easy to source as they were common to Series 2 XJ saloons and, being painted, are fairly easy to restore. With the chrome rims and later hub caps, especially if you paint the black around the cooling holes, it would be difficult to distinguish from the chrome variant from a quick glance or any distance.

Regards,

Simon

very kind of you guys !
actually I found :
on one hand, E-type series 3 hubcaps with the chequered flag
on the other hand, chrome wheels (from an XJC I guess) for 350? delivered to my home on sunday with Dunlops SP (too old, I think)
..and a 5th chrome wheel in my boot !

so unless there is a last minute issue, problem solved !

now I have to purchase the right tyres:
Pirelli Cinturato or Michelin XWX ??
