#1 Chrome on cantrail, S2

Post by mcoily » Mon Feb 09, 2015 2:34 pm

Dear E-typer,
first of all hello to all of you. I`m a long time reader but till now not writer.
By trying to let the restoration go me 1970 S2 Etype be accomplished till spring THIS year i do need some help.
Does anyone have a source for the little chrome rails which surround the inner window frame left & right side? Its a sliced hollow-round profile which is mounted on the outer Profile of the cantrail-cover. 1x long & 1x short piece / side.
Next question would be how to press the profile onto the cover WITHOUT crushing the profile or demolishing the cover. My desastereous upholstery workshop ruined the original ones by trying to remount the profile with a usual Ppumber-pliers. Is there any kind of plastic-widepliers or such?

Im hard trying not to let the last 10% of quality-restauration on the road due to incompetence or unawareness so I?d be very thankful to get advice.
Pleas excuse my bumpy school-english

The cant rail chromes should be a firm press fit onto the cant rails once they have been trimmed. They are retained by a couple of clips at either end of the reverse face of the cant rail. If yours have been damaged, it may be worth looking at using a length of bonnet chrome and gently bending to the correct profile.

#3 Cant identify the mentioned clips

Post by mcoily » Sat Feb 14, 2015 11:13 am

Hey Chris,
thanks for the hint. Bonnetchromes have been ordered and I'll report wether we managed to bent them correctly.
But I dont know the:
They are retained by a couple of clips at either end of the reverse face of the cant rail.
Do you have a picture or drawing of these clips?
As much as i know my trimmings were just hardly pressed on the PVC edge of the liner material.
Maybe this wasn't the original condition?

Thanks for any hints!

I will try and find the spare can't rail I have stored somewhere and take a couple of photos to show the clips (these are quite straightforward to make if yours are missing / corroded). This may take a couple of days but I'll do my best.

I have now managed to dig out the spare pair of S1 FHC can't rails. My memory must be failing me since there was no evidence of the clips I was so certain were used - old age biting early !😥
The lower trims which run under the rear quarter window also have a chrome trim and these are retained by the clip to which I was refering.
Looking at my cant rails, the chrome trims are held in place by simply being pushed over the edge of the steel base and vinyl trim. The overall curvature of the cant rail also serves to retain the chrome in place.

Hope this helps
Chris

Hello Chris,

thanks for your efforts and don't mind the aging.
Regulary aging means more financial freedom and that compensates the mental downfall- at least a bit.
I finally managed to mount the cantrails by clipping them around the Edge.
First we had to enlarge the gap in the profile for the new PVC Material was slightly thicker than the original material. Then fixing the profile by bending it back in place with a wide pliers.
If i would be more competent i`d post some picts- but that i first have to study!

Hi Patrick,
Glad to hear you got everything sorted with the cant rails.
I agree that ageing does provide financial freedom........if only you could remember what you were going to do with it!
