hi, i was at the NEC yesterday and seen a nice looking 71 US import at runnymede motors http://www.runnymedemotorcompany.com/Mo ... f3ag9o0pz1
has anyone seen the car or know what has been done, not sure if its had anew sill and there was repair to a front panel but other than that looks nice. Also does the price look ok.
All comments appreciated.

Always a little difficult to say from photos alone, but the interior looks to be in fantastic condition. Sable is a bit of a difficult colour to love and the dealer's own admission the existing paintwork is faded in places so you'd probably want to consider a full repaint. The engine looks to have started out as a US spec Stromberg unit but then been converted to triple (non-SU) carbs along with the electronic ignition and stainless manifold. And she looks to be riding a little low.

You'd probably want someone like Angus to give it the once-over: although on face-value it looks in good condition, some coastal parts of Texas are notoriously hot, humid and salty. Also if it's not been used for 13 years it's going to require some re-conditioning to bring it back to full health again.

Assuming it's as sound as it looks, the price looks reasonable.

thanks for the reply, do you have a contact number for Angus.

There doesnt really seem to be alot going for it, LHD(i dont mind but many do) shitty colour, US spec, its just that it stood out at me and looked great, maybe it was the false lighting inside the arena and i like the thaught its unrestored apparently.

Angus is one of the moderators here (1954Etype) and knows his way round Series 2s probably better than anyone else. Details here:

I actually like the colour! And it does look great in the pics. But as Simon suggested, you shouldn't underestimate the potential recommissioning costs.
One other thing; if it's a USA spec car, although the carbs have been uprated, do you know what the final drive ratios are? You might find that they are still USA spec, so you'll be doing very high revs at 70 mph cruising. It can be quite expensive to convert to the UK spec 3.07 final drive.
If you look at the speedo, the ratio should be printed on it in small print under the centre.

It has been messed with though. Weber carbs, tubular manifolds, incorrect plug leads/caps which could mean hidden tinkering. Definitely worth asking Angus to go and do an appraisal - a day of his time is going to save you a lot of money in the long run and you will at least have a list of stuff that needs doing.

If it hasn't been used since 2001 I'd love to know how come the American whitewalls can be described by a trader as 'excellent'.

They are either new (in which case you'd expect them to say so), or they were excellent in 2001 in which case they are effectively scrap. And this is coming from someone who hates to chuck anything out...

The tyres on my car wer 15 yrs old when I got it, when I realised this I had them changed, when the fitter tried to remove one tyre the sidewall exploded. I will never drive on aged tyres again, I'd hate to think what would have happened had I been driving at the time.

Welcome to the group of us who really appreciate the S2.
What plans do you have for the car? Will it stay sinister or be converted to RHD? And what about the carbs?
Of course the first thing to do is just enjoy owning and driving an E Type. Savour it all, including the envious looks of people in the street. Not the reason for owning, but a good reminder of why we love the cars so much.

Firstly i've not sat in the car yet. I saw the car at the nec classic last week as i turned up late sunday to collect my car which i had for sale on a dealers stand. Car i'm selling(now sold) is a 1953 356. Beautiful car and curves. I've always liked the curves of the e types and especially the early models, never really paid attention to the later cars. The 356 has turned from my pride and joy into an investment at which i cannot justify having such a nice car at the value it is just sitting there not being used(due to 2 young children it doesnt get used). So when i was at the nec i saw the e type sitting there and it just attracted my attention straight away and as i looked around the other cars i kept returning the sable coloured e type with its beautiful patina and never welded it looked great and i think then i decided i had to have it, there are a couple of places which have been touched in and part of the bonnet has been repainted but i think its due to sunburn.Angus inspected the car and only found minor problems so i will sort those and leave the carbs and drive ratio as it should be. I will try and keep as much original as possible and hopefully drive the car more than i did the 356.

Drive drive drive. Especially overseas at every opportunity, although UK is fine too.

Undo the secondary throttle linkage and jam the plates open (five minutes/two clips and get plenty of extra low-end poke from the Stranglebergs. You won't know it's a twin carb car until you're north of 3500 rpm.

Oh, and drive it!

Here you go. To inspire you with thoughts of sunny summer drives, me with "Ol' Sable" back in 1981/82:

Peter, this car has been converted to triple Weber DCOE's. Assuming they're correctly set-up (easier said than done) it should make a few more ponies than a triple SU one let a lone twin Stomberg car.

Having said that, do you have any more details (pics?) on how to do the linkage/plates trick on the Stromberg cars? I might give it a try on mine.

Cheers

Lots more of Simons lovely car, and the story behind it, in his Restoration and Owners Gallery thread here... viewtopic.php?t=5837

It'd be good to see your Sable steeds together one day 8)
