Can anyone tell me the material on the back of this heat shield please. The one on my car which is a U.S. Import has a relatively new shield and the material looks very like asbestos.
Thanks
Tony

The original ones did too, because they were.

If it's greyish and feels hard it's probably a cement-style thing like Hardy Backer Board.
If it's softer very white and friable it'll be a non-asbestose fragile substitute.
If it's slightly scorched you've got a missing tile off the space shuttle.

Thanks Peter
The guy doing some work for me was worried about it being asbestos, especially as it looked so new, but it appears to be the second material you referred to.
