petrol leak on Stromberg carb

When I started my Jag today I first let the ignition on a few minutes to listen to the Tic-Tic of the fuel pump, and it did'nt completely stop, mybe stil one tic every 5 secs
then there was a strong smell of fuel when I opened the bonnet; some fuel was coming from the small holes on the link between the foremost carb and the air intake

there is also some fuel coming from beneath the same carb



is this the usual overflow when floater is blocked ? I tried to hit it with a hammer but no difference

what would you recommend ?
can I fire - er I mean start- the engine ?

Rolando, I certainly would not fire the car under such circumstances, even though with engine running the fuel pressure would drop resulting in less leak. This is indeed the symptom of a blocked float or a blocked needle valve. Time for serious overhaul, for both strommies.

good thud with metallic hammer on carb and it stopped

No... this is a leak!

I think my main problem was a sticking valve into the float chamber. (I'd taken it off and squirted it readily with carb cleaner, refitted and re-tested here

As you can see it didnt always fall back down, (I guess it might have with fuel pressure behind it?) but I decided to change it anyway.

I spent some time talking (via email) to some really helpful people at Burlen and I thoroughly reccomend them for technical expertise, though in the end they didnt have stock, so I got some service kits "overnight" from Southern Carburettors. Fitted. Sorted. No Leaks.

I'm not "out of the woods" with my fuel system yet, I think I now have a starvation problem on warm re-start, but thats a problem for another day and I havent looked into that yet - but the car isnt the fire risk it once was.
