rear number plate

I'm new to this site
I recently bought a 1969 series 2 fhc in Holland
I'm fitting new plates with its UK reg but the reversing lights obscure the first and last digits of the oblong plate.
I can't fit a square plate as it would foul on the tailpipes which aren't splayed.
I'm thinking of removing the reversing lights.
Is this legal?
Any other thoughts?

Hi Tom, what people do is fit Elan rear lights which include a reverse light then the original reverse lights are deleted. My S2 has them with straight exhausts.
But there's a newer way of doing that with Marek's rear lights:

I have bought items from Marek and been very pleased with them.

The Elan lights are complete with chrome but cost about ?250 each. Marek's solution is cheaper and easier.

There is no legal requirement for reversing lights, and they are worse than useless anyway . I should just delete them unless you are a stickler for (a version of ) originality

I went to the NEC Classic car show at the weekend.

There were a couple of S2/S3 with reversing lights in the original location, at least one of which was partially obscuring the number plate, another would have had it not had a cherished plate, short of letters/numbers, but I did spot this car where the owner had relocated the reversing lights to suit.

If you do keep the reversing lights it is well worth upgrading to the brighter LEDs. I changed mine and they do give a worthwhile light

I use a lighter shade of red in all of my rear light clusters, so aside from having over 100 high brightness LEDs for reversing, the original brake lights and sidelights become brighter. The original "Lucas" red lacquer is very dark red and this hugely restricts the amount of light that gets through.
