#1 S2 rear caliper mounts

Post by chrisp » Tue Jan 26, 2016 4:15 pm

Hi all

My srs 2 was dismantled by a bunch of apes before I bought it, who simply threw everything unlabelled into a series of boxes.

I?m now reassembling the rear IRS (Series 2, so the larger Girling calipers). I notice that the mounting plates (horseshoes) are handed but I don?t know which is which. They will affect the positioning of the caliper. Which is correct? One arm of each horseshoe has a short extension beyond the mounting bolts. Top or bottom?

Thanks

Chris

Hi Chris.....cant think of the part your refering to...other than the thin horseshoe shaped brake shield that fits to the front hub/caliper

No, I mean the brackets which attach the rear calipers to the diff.

The calipers attach directly to the diff IIRC

Edited to add: do you have the new catalogue from SNGB?
Very clearly shows all the parts for the S1 and S2.
The bolt is shown as 'Bolt, securing Caliper to Drive Unit' P.No. C30251

Agree with that.....dont forget when you mount the disc you shim it the get the disc central to the caliper and lock wire the caliper mount bolts

No, that?s only true for later srs 2s. Up to 1R26575 (LHD) the caliper mounts via a bracket similar (but not identical) to the srs1.
That?s shown on the SNGB catalogue as part C22817/8

My car is almost the first srs 2 fhc built.

That?s what I?m trying to find out ? which way up it should be.

So the question should be ..what way up does the rear caliper adaptor plate part no C22817/8 fit..for an early S2

Consider solving the problem backwards - two points:-

The calipers are going to have to sit up straight else the pads will be hard to get to in a restricted space.

The handrake mechanisms which sit on top of the calipers have to fit into the cage such that they slightly poke out of the gaps at the top and front, otherwise the geometry probably won't allow you to even fit anything back into the car when reassembled. The other end of the handbrake pad levers will want to be in line with the parallelogram lever thingy that joins it all to the handrake cable.

kind regards
Marek
