#1 Different oil filter?

Hi, yesterday I wanted to install a new oil filter however the oil filter I got from SNG Barratt was smaller than the one on the car. After some searching on the internet it seems I have a larger filter and bowl/cannister. Is this correct for a late series 2 car?
One other question, where should I put the spring clip on the bolt? At the end or somewhere else? It is not very clear (yet) to me what it's function is...
