#1 Front turn signal gaskets

Post by Tbob » Tue Aug 16, 2016 1:41 pm

S2 front turn signals. I am referring to the gasket between the housing and the bonnet metal. Item 7 below.

I can't find a way to install these. .

I don't t think the housing is supposed to fit INSIDE the lip of the gasket. If I put the housing on top of the gasket, there seems to be very little contact area between the gasket and housing.

What are your experiences? Any advice?

I can't be certain that the pair of US spec '69 front indicators I have are original but I'm pretty certain they are. The item 7 gasket on those is a grey foam with uniform thickness across the whole gasket right up to the edge so there is no "lip" to be inside or outside.

Doesn't directly answer your question but I hope it helps.

Item 8 on my car is indeed a foam gasket. Item 7 (pic below) is molded rubber, not foam. As you can see, it has a very narrow profile along the edges mating to the housing.

Wrong gasket?

On my car the curvature of the light matches the plinth on the bonnet so there's no need for a gasket that builds in thickness towards the curved end as the one in your photo does. I'd offer your light up to the bonnet without the gasket and if there is no gap between the curved part of the light and the bonnet you need a flat (foam) gasket, not the rubber one you have.

Just fitted a new set of gaskets to mine this week as one was missing all together, the other was heavily split around the outside chamfered edge & looked really tatty. Also upgraded from american XKE one piece amber indicators to UK amber indicators with amber bulbs / white side lights (via Marek's upgrade) - looks so much better with the split balance
Bought them here & they work & look just fine.

When I bought a new £1000 underpan for my series 2, this was one of the many areas that needed a little "adjustment" when I offered up the original lights to check the fitment. That and probably another 3 days work to get the rest of it to fit.
On a separate note this really does highlight the need to check everything before paint.
